LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Flip-flopper Garland a poor choice

Judge Merrick Garland, lauded for his prosecution of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, testified that if confirmed as attorney general he would make the investigation and prosecution of those involved in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol his top priority. Published February 24, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Forget Trump? No, thanks

Henry Barbour's "A path forward for the GOP in 2022 and 2024" (Web, Feb. 19) is a study in cynical revisionism. Mr. Barbour actually concludes by writing, "By focusing on policy and getting things done, Republicans can regain the confidence our traditional conservative base and those who left us in the last four years." It's as if he had slept through the entire Trump presidency. Published February 23, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Harris should right her wrong

Leadership brings with it responsibility. Simply put, we look to leaders to lead us, give us accurate information, guidance and most importantly, the truth. Failures can cause a loss of money, health and, at worst, deadly results. Published February 23, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: What about other deaths?

As the alleged death toll from COVID-19 surpasses 500,000, I don't recall much concern from former President Clinton when, between April and June of 1994, after 800,000 Rwandans were killed with machetes in churches. And approximately 576,000 Iraqi children most likely died around 1995 due to the sanctions Clinton pushed. Published February 23, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Oppose Vilsack nomination

Tom Vilsack's nomination as secretary of agriculture does not belong within President Joe Biden's progressive agenda. Mr. Vilsack has served as governor of Iowa, as secretary of agriculture under President Obama, and as chief lobbyist for the dairy industry. His candidacy is opposed by a vast coalition of small and minority farmers, as well as consumer, labor and environmental advocates. Here's why: Published February 22, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Biden one-month accomplishments few

President Biden isn't doing that great and he's only 30 days in. Let's recap. He's already been pushing at least 50 executive orders down our throats, measures that do little, if nothing at all, for the American citizen (in fact, they've already cost jobs). He's cozied up to Xi in China, saying in a CNN townhall that genocide and concentration camps are just a way of life. He was absolutely nowhere to be found when winter weather pounded the mainland. Oh, and let's not forget that secretly added more troops in Syria. Published February 22, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Pitfalls of capitalism

To conservative eyes Wikipedia is biased ("Co-founder says Wikipedia's neutrality 'long gone,' cites leftist bias," Web, Feb. 21). To realist's eyes, it is biased in both directions. Published February 22, 2021

A pickup sends a wake of snow melt high into the air as the driver plows through a large puddle at Barrow and South 11th streets intersection in Abilene, Texas, Friday, Feb. 19, 2021. Temperatures climbed above freezing for the first time since Sunday's record 14.8-inch snowfall. (Ronald W. Erdrich, The Abilene Reporter-News via AP)

EDITORIAL: Texas freeze gives Joe Biden an electric vehicles conundrum

Some functions of government are frivolous, such as a $3 million study of hamster fights. Others are fundamental, like keeping on the lights. As President Biden promotes a rapid transition to electric vehicles (EVs) as part of his plans for a cleaner economy, he must remain extremely vigilant to ensure the nation doesn't run out of juice. A shortage of energy is more than an inconvenience. Published February 21, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Rush Limbaugh will be missed

West Coast liberals like to go to places like the French Laundry restaurant in California, where meal prices start at $350 per person (though Willie Brown says he heard that just the wine bill for California Gov. Gavin Newsom's infamous dinner was $12,000). Apparently, that's the only way to wash down white-truffle-and-pumpkin soup. Everything is choice and apparently worth the price. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: This security review will be a joke

A recent Times piece by Rowan Scarborough reads: "Retired Army Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honore, whom House Speaker Nancy Pelosi named to head a security review of the U.S. Capitol, has stated that he believes the Capitol Police and the House and Senate sergeants at arms were "complicit" in the deadly Jan. 6 riot" ("Pelosi's pick to lead Capitol probe says police 'complicit,' helped rioters," Web, Feb. 18). Black supremacy, anyone? Oh, that's right; according to the political left, Black people can't be bigoted. Published February 21, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: When in doubt, blame America

Many realists fear that Biden foreign policy will be informed by the president's Nobel Peace Prize-winning predecessor and teacher, Barack Obama. Mr. Obama won his esteemed award for a series of speeches detailing his belief that American foreign policy was the proximate cause of most of the world's troubles, not for any concrete achievement facilitating even a smidgen of peace. In other words, hopeful speechifying substituted for real progress, a nascent element of cancel culture. Published February 21, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Managers’ moves border on fraud

I was glad to see Donald Trump's defense lawyers in the recent impeachment proceedings concur with my observations of deceptive tactics used by the House managers to prosecute the case. The same tactic is utilized when a story doesn't fit the liberal media's narrative, falling into what is know as fake news. Published February 18, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Defund Wuhan institute, EcoHealth now

Last April our investigators first uncovered that National Institutes of Health funding was secretly being funneled by Peter Daszak and his non-profit EcoHealth Alliance to dangerous coronavirus experiments on bats and other animals at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). This is the perilous partnership that many experts believe caused the COVID-19 pandemic, and that past and current administrations want investigated ("White House warns WHO not to be influenced by China on virus origin probe," Web, Feb. 13). LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Why is ‘U.K. variant’ not offensive?

I am trying to understand why calling COVID-19 the Wuhan virus or the China virus is now considered racist, but noting that more virulent versions of the virus coming from the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa are spreading across the U.S. is perfectly OK. I guess these other strains are like the Spanish Influenza or Ebola. Published February 17, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Citizens deserve the truth

Now that we are over the expensive, divisive circus that was the second impeachment of Donald Trump, we have several needs. First, citizens require a serious and independent investigation of the insurrection that took place Jan. 6. Judging from its involvement in the lies to the FISA court, the FBI cannot be trusted.
