LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Surveys hardly scientific

The headline "Infectious disease experts say coronavirus mutations will make vaccines useless within a year" (Web, March 31) is a bit hyperbolic, but it poses the question of how useful the coronavirus vaccines are. At this point there are not any studies showing a strong association between lockdowns and mask wearing, and infections and infection fatality rates. Some vaccines are extraordinarily effective, and many others fall far short. The polio vaccine was a major breakthrough. The flu vaccine, less so. Published April 1, 2021

The interesting and relevant commentary piece by Brandon J. Weichert ("Addressing, and strengthening, the weaknesses of the U.S. military," Web, March 31) is spoiled by the weak ending suggesting that the Biden administration quickly address these problems. Published April 1, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Stop giving Iran ‘treats’

There are basic principles of human behavior which the Biden-Harris administration is ignoring in its misguided approach to Iran. The great psychologist B.F. Skinner elucidated the principle that when a particular behavior is followed by a reward, that behavior increases. We can see this process occurring as President Biden and Vice President Harris closely follow each instance of Iranian intransigence regarding re-entry into an Iran deal with a new, more conciliatory offer. From releasing billions of dollars to dropping the requirement that Iran first cease its nuclear proliferation violations of the Iran deal, the Biden-Harris administration is guaranteeing increased Iranian intransigence. EDITORIAL: Biden should answer North Korea’s missiles with a missive

Old habits die hard, and North Korea has once again greeted new American leadership with the rattling of the saber. Rather than allow the unsettling sound to reverberate unanswered, a more productive course would be to reaffirm progress toward denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula made during the previous administration, and to ask the North to do the same. EDITORIAL: Saying ‘No’ to ‘vaccine passports’

COVID-19 "vaccine passports" will become the next civil-rights crisis of our time. They are un-American, a violation of individual freedom and pose a menacing privacy risk regardless of the entity requiring their use. Published March 30, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Far-left parental spying is too far

Kudos to Ian Prior and his efforts to avenge cancel culture ("Becoming a 'Cancel Culture Avenger,'" Web, March 29). Regarding the "Chardonnay Antifa" which Mr. Prior referenced, perhaps a better moniker would be "The Loudoun County Chardonnay STASI," which of course refers to the former East German secret police who encouraged neighbors to spy on each other during their Communist reign. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Mileage tax unconstitutional

The Buttigieg and Biden/Harris "mileage tax" violates the Ninth Amendment, which protects our unenumerated rights ("Buttigieg: Biden eyes 'mileage tax' on drivers that 'shows a lot of promise,'" Web, March 27). The Ninth Amendment reads: "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." One of these rights is the right to travel state to state, given in the Privilege and Immunities Clause in Article IV, Section 2, Clause 1 of the Constitution. Published March 29, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Vietnam War was a disaster, period

My Vietnam War memories were securely filed away until recently, when I started watching those expat Southeast Asia travel videos on YouTube ("The Vietnam War was winnable," Web, March 26). Up popped a statue of the late Sen. John McCain, sitting beside the lake he had crashed landed in. The lake is part of a park in the middle of Hanoi. I nearly fell off my chair. Apparently this is one statue that Black Lives Matter and antifa have not gotten to. Another surprise is that Ho Chi Minh City is referred to as Saigon, and apparently no one cares. What is this world coming to when someone is willing to celebrate the release and purchase of a pair of tennis shoes that are decorated with a pentagram pendant, marked with the number 666 and contain a drop of human blood in the sole? Rapper Lil Nas X is releasing 666 pairs of just such shoes. Published March 29, 2021

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Disaster by any name

The Communists and Marxists of the late 1800s and early 1900s pitted the working class against the elite to divide the country and create divisions that allowed them to prevail. Today that doesn't work. So in order to create hatred and division, today's left uses race. Either way, the results will be the same. Tyranny will prevail and we the normal people will lose our rights and freedom. Published March 28, 2021

COVID-19 cases in India have hit a five-month high. Not to panic. India's recovery rate is 95% (the highest in the world) and the death rate is 161 per million, one of the lowest in the world. There is very strong sentiment against vaccinations in India. So what accounts for the high recovery rate? The widespread use of hydroxychloroquine, which has yielded to Ivermectin. EDITORIAL: Higher taxes are what Democrats do

President Biden may have promised middle-class Americans that he wouldn't raise their taxes, but he didn't say he wouldn't boost their costs. In an interconnected society, higher taxes on the wealthy and corporate America radiate outward like ripples on a pond, eventually reaching every wallet. With four years to work its productivity-punishing mischief, Taxageddon is approaching. Published March 25, 2021

The Democrats' self-serving and staged rationale for seizing guns from the public smacks of treacherous intentions. Such individuals will only grow in number as the weak, catastrophic open-border policies and anti-law enforcement crusades continue.
