No new money for the IRS: Agency mired in partisan scandal and inefficiency
After Richard Nixon resigned, many pundits pronounced the Republican Party finished. Instead, by a careful recalibration and transformation under Ronald Reagan into the party of limited government, the GOP regained control of the White House in six years and earned a congressional majority in 20. Catholic leadership shirking duties
The Catholic church today is being held together not by leadership but by a thread of many heroic and faithful pastors and priests at the parish level. Published July 15, 2021
On Cuba, left foulest of hypocrites
As the U.S. finalizes its withdrawal from Afghanistan, the fate of the thousands of Afghans who helped the Americans hangs in the balance. The people of Cuba are rising up in righteous indignation against the Communist system that has oppressed them for decades. They chant slogans of freedom and some carry American flags. Yet the American response to this outburst of liberty has been tepid at best. Published July 15, 2021
Biden and team the real threats
According to Democrats, the Georgia and Texas voting-reform bills and the Jan. 6 rioters entering the Capitol constitute the worst threat to our democracy. Although the initial, biased report claimed eight people were killed during the protests, the only one killed was unarmed 35-year-old Ashli Babbitt, a U.S. Air Force veteran. The Georgia and Texas voting bills are focused on fair voting reforms. Published July 15, 2021
BLM blames U.S. for Cuba’s communist shortcomings
Black Lives Matter, founded by self-declared "trained Marxists," has announced its support of Cuba's communist regime, blaming the island's plight on the U.S government's "inhumane treatment of Cubans." Published July 15, 2021
Good outweighs bad in desalination
Lake Mead at the Hoover Dam is at 37% capacity, the lowest level since the 1930s. The lake provides water to about 40 million people in Nevada, Arizona and California, but a severe drought and diminished snowfall in the Rocky Mountains have significantly reduced the supply. Other lakes in the region are at historically low levels as well. Published July 14, 2021
Cubans long for freedom ‘woke’ despises
During the Vietnam War I was a Marine squad leader in mortars, and I ended up on a 100% disability fighting against Communist Russians and Chinese who backed North Vietnam. As if that weren't bad enough, we had race riots back in the U.S., where Black Americans were rightly fighting for their autonomy -- while brainwashed hippies abused our servicemen and -women, not acknowledging the sacrifices made for their right to protest. ‘Rural’ voters can master IDs, Kamala
FedEx bought Kinko's in 2004 and rebranded the stores under the name FedEx Office in 2008, which might explain why, as Vce President Kamala Harris observed, people who live in rural communities have no Kinko's near them ("Kamala Harris: The portrait of how desperation slides into frantic idiocy," Web, July 13). Oh, the horror! Published July 14, 2021
The Biden vax offensive: Not everyone declining the COVID-19 vaccine is a refusenik or fool
There is an old saying that you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. President Biden surely knows it by heart but doesn't want to hear it now. Published July 14, 2021
Tax spam callers to stop them
It seems that one issue unites all of us, whether Democrat, Republican, independent, reform, Libertarian, socialist, etc. We all dislike 'junk' telephone calls. We have tried the "do-not-call" lists, blocking calls on our phones, having our carriers block calls and the like. Yet nothing seems to stop these annoyances. Published July 13, 2021
‘Fungus meat’ better for planet
Meat substitutes derived from fungi are not a brand-new frontier ("Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates can take their fungus meat and -- fuhgettaboutit," Web, July 8). For example, Quorn, a delicious and popular vegan chicken, contains mycoprotein, which is derived from the Fusarium venenatum fungus. A German company is using the humble mushroom to produce quality analogs, and in Colorado, Meati Foods is making steak and chicken breasts from filamentous fungi. Published July 13, 2021
Each responsible for own success
Blaming others for one's unhappiness or dissatisfaction seems to be the popular rage in contemporary society. There are vindictive responses to slights, both real or imagined. Wasn't it philosopher Blaise Pascal who mused that many people live in wretchedness, unaware they are themselves contributors to that state? Published July 13, 2021
Earning the label of ‘enemy’: Journalists lose credibility when they scorn objectivity
It's a rough time to work in the news business. Digital media have eaten print products alive, replacing them with dancing electrons that blur the lines between fact and fiction. Published July 13, 2021
We’re not all astronauts
With Richard Branson's excursion flight to see the curvature of the earth, the mainstream media is now proclaiming that "private citizens" can start to be called "astronauts." This is just like kids' sporting events in the past few decades: Everybody gets a trophy, which makes trophies meaningless ("Virgin Galactic's Richard Branson blasts off into space," Web, July 11). ‘Big siblings’ will find you
Among the latest pieces of news from the office of 'Big Sister' Pelosi: She wants to assign U.S. Capitol Police to various "hot spots" throughout the nation to "confront radical extremists." These are not Black Lives Matter, antifa, law breakers, communists or the like, but Trump supporters, America-firsters other conservative role models and those who support biblical morality. Fought abroad, welcomed at home
Isn't it ironic? America has been fighting communism for decades on almost every continent. We have liberated millions of people from the iron fist of communism and all the other 'isms.' Published July 12, 2021
Cuban uprising should serve as a wake-up call to American socialists
"Cuba isn't yours," Cuban protestors chanted in front of Communist Party buildings on the island, according to videos posted online that went viral Sunday. Published July 12, 2021
Freedom, safety go hand-in-hand
Dean Karayanis' op-ed about free speech includes a fragment of Dr. Martin Niemoeller's well-known commentary about how the totalitarian Nazi regime came for opponents ("Fight back against Big Tech oligarchs before free speech disappears," Web, July 8). However, back in 1967 and 1968 I had the privilege of hearing the reverend doctor preach during the Sunday chapel service at Grove City College's Harbison Chapel. The first parts of his litany were slightly different from the usually encountered version, in a subtle yet powerful way that made it memorable enough to stay with me some 50 years. Don’t allow total takeover
Just as it will make life increasingly difficult for you until you are coerced to take an experimental vaccine, the government may mandate self-driving cars. Your insurance rates will continue to go up on standard cars, as will registration and sales taxes, until ultimately all cars that are not automatic are banned. No more ownership. Bill Gates will lease these cars and your every movement will be recorded. Published July 11, 2021
Stop left from bashing U.S., flag
The negative rhetoric over this past July 4 was disgusting. We live in the greatest country on Earth. Love it or leave it. Published July 11, 2021
