LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Hillary Clinton more dangerous than Vladimir Putin
Hillary Clinton asserts that she lost the election due to Russian hacking, for which she blames Vladimir Putin. According to her, it was a part of Mr. Putin's strategy to discredit the tenets of our government and undermine our democracy. The truth, however, is much more frightening. Where are Donald Trump’s free market voices?
Donald Trump's Cabinet selections so far have been good -- principled conservatives like Dr. Ben Carson at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and Rep. Tom Price, a physician, who will head the Department of Health and Human Services. Published December 19, 2016
Obama, the polarizing president
Tooting your own horn is one way to make sure your tune gets heard. Barack Obama wants to finish his presidency on a high note, so he's arguing his own case for a good grade. However, he will learn, as presidents before him, that his legacy is not his to define, but for the people to decide whether he deserves to be immortalized on Mount Rushmore or merely to have his name on a presidential library on the south side of Chicago. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Blame Congress for immigration woes
As a legal immigrant proudly working for the U.S. government, I was disappointed to read David Keene's Dec. 1 op-ed, "Hell on the border." It incorrectly faults President Obama for the current immigration crisis. The president is not the problem. For years, members of Congress are the ones who have neglected to make progress on the issue of immigration because they're more concerned with their own reelection. Published December 18, 2016
Harry Truman’s unpopular civil rights leadership
Harry S. Truman has become one of our most popular presidents, admired by conservatives and liberals, Democrats and Republicans, for his character, his integrity and his unpretentious, down-to-earth good sense that was the hallmark of his time and place. Published December 18, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Democrats party of the passe
Writing as a life-long registered Democrat (current age 77), I can tell you that the reason Democrats are losing elections at all levels is really quite simple ("Labor Secretary Tom Perez joins mix of candidates to head DNC," Web, Dec. 15). The Democrats are a party of the old — old leaders and irrelevant old ideas that no longer fit with the problems and issues facing the citizens of our nation. Published December 18, 2016
Court upholds Virginia’s voter ID law
Virginia and the cause of free and fair elections had a good day last week when a panel of three federal judges unanimously upheld the state's common-sense voting law requiring voters to present photographic proof of identification to cast their ballots. Published December 18, 2016
Charles Hurt rejoins The Washington Times as new opinion editor
Charles Hurt, who went from covering fires, city hall and the mob in Detroit to becoming one of the nation's feistiest conservative voices in print, online and on air, will become the next opinion editor of The Washington Times, newspaper President and CEO Larry Beasley announced Sunday. Published December 18, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Fake news nothing new to left
Why has the subject of "fake news" just now arisen in the mainstream media? It's because online media outlets made false comments regarding a Washington pizzeria, and these comments allegedly drove a man to take a weapon into that pizzeria and fire it. There has been much fake news reported by the mainstream media, but only now is it making a big stink. Published December 15, 2016
Business expected to boom under President Trump
Happy news is breaking out all over, apparently in expectation of a business-friendly president next year. The November reading of the small-business optimism index of the National Federation of Independent Business, released this week, jumped to 98.4 percent from 94.9 percent, the greatest surge since 2009. Reforming prison reform
Criminal justice reform is a good idea, but every idea of how to make the reform is not a good idea. The system we have now is dangerously dysfunctional, but the Obama administration, and many of its friends on the left seem to think there's no good reason to imprison anyone, except for the occasional businessman in trouble with regulators. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Mainstream media losing control?
There are many politicians and many in the mainstream press that claim that they believe in the First Amendment to the Constitution. That amendment protects the right of religiosity and religious worship, the right to free speech and freedom of the press, assembly and conscience, and the right to petition government. Over time, many of the supposedly pro-First-Amendment entities have proven that their support is totally false. Published December 15, 2016
Shared values is what makes America exceptional
White America is dying off. Does it matter? It obviously matters to those who are doing the dying. In the long run, however, what is important to the future of the nation is not the endurance of a particular color, but the endurance of the nation's culture. Published December 14, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Hunters could donate in other ways
If hunters truly want to help the hungry — instead of using economically disadvantaged families as yet another excuse to justify their bloodlust — killing animals and tossing their corpses at the poor is probably the least effective thing they can do ("Hunters help the hungry: Venison vital to charities," Web, Dec. 10). Published December 14, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Run government like a business
Hypocrisy seems to be a badge of honor that Democrats in Congress wear with pride. They have set in with a barrage of objections to the Cabinet appointees submitted by President-elect Donald Trump ("Trump picks face difficult confirmation hearings," Dec. 14). Published December 14, 2016
Complete the Dakota Access Pipeline
Anyone surprised by Barack Obama's last-minute decision to pass on the completion of the Dakota Access Pipeline hasn't been paying attention. Going to war, even with foes of fossil fuels, has rarely appealed to the man who prefers to lead from behind. Published December 14, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Electors still have choice to make
On Dec. 19, the electoral college is going to cast its votes for president and vice president of the United States. This is because the Founding Fathers chose a system in which neither the president nor the vice president is elected directly by the voters. In our system, the voters vote for the electors, and the electors in turn cast their votes for these offices. Published December 13, 2016
The Rex Tillerson nomination
Short of serious reservations about the credibility, character and competence of his nominees, every president is entitled to choose his Cabinet. The president, after all, is the man who will be held responsible for everything. Published December 13, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Bahrain is no U.S. partner
Maybe S. Rob Sobhani is right that no world leader "will come close to being a truer partner of Washington than King Hamad" -- if being a true partner means heading a regime that respects neither human rights nor the rule of law ("Trump's Bahrain Moment," Web, Dec. 11). Published December 13, 2016
Jill Stein gets the hook
Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate for president, got a reminder Monday that her 15 minutes of fame are up. If politics were just a little bit more like vaudeville, she would have got the hook weeks ago. Published December 13, 2016
