John Lewis and the suicide of an icon

Democrats have yet to grasp the fact that Donald Trump is not your typical Republican, eager to curl up in the fetal position when fired on. He fires back, usually with both barrels. Published January 16, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Boomers paved ‘snowflakes’ way

Woodstock highlighted the worst generation this country produced until those baby boomers formed breeding pairs. These people achieved self-actualization through moral exhibitionism and militant self-absorption, while ignoring the nobility that their parents, those from the Greatest Generation, displayed throughout the Depression and World War II. Obama transformed America, but not in a good way

Barack Obama vowed to transform America, and he succeeded. After his two terms in the White House, the day-to-day lives of Americans are very different from what they were. If religious faith and politics are important to the feelings of well-being, the Age of Obama has pushed the nation backward. Transformation can be good, and it can be bad, depending on who's transforming what. Published January 16, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: We are a republic

Running from the discredited and self-incriminating name of "liberals" to big-government, oppressive "Progressives," the Democrats' rebranding should prompt Republicans to correct their own language. Published January 15, 2017

Obama’s legacy of bad racial feeling

George Washington established the precedent of the farewell address. Not every president has something to say as he leaves the White House. Those who do, or think they do, usually indulge mostly in self-congratulations. Some indulge self-delusion. Published January 15, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: VAT border adjustments unfair

Stephen Moore's op-ed, "The case for a border adjustable tax system" (Web, Jan. 8), is a juxtaposition to President-elect Donald Trump's pledge to negotiate and reverse the unfair trade practices of other countries. Published January 15, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Donald Trump should build bridges, not walls

I appreciate President-elect Trump's sentiment of wanting to make America great again. Part of that legacy is for America not only to be generous to its own people, but also to the rest of the world. To build a wall will not bring a solution. Published January 15, 2017

CNN learns a hard lesson from Donald Trump

Whatever else Donald Trump may be, he's a new kind of politician. He's not afraid of the press. He doesn't drop to the fetal position, cowering as if pleading for a little mercy, when The New York Times or The Washington Post -- or CNN News -- cries boo! Published January 15, 2017

Cory Booker and the bigotry of the high-minded

Only the terminally high-minded are qualified to break precedents, and Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey is qualified, at least in his own mind, to break hoary Senate tradition to testify against a colleague up for a presidential appointment. Published January 12, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Rex Tillerson a strong pick

After all the negatives about Donald Trump's secretary of state nominee Rex Tillerson, the Senate Foreign Senate Committee hearing was refreshing ("Rex Tillerson takes tough line on Russian hacking in tense hearing," Web, Jan. 11). Mr. Tillerson effectively responded to questions using his common sense, knowledge, diplomacy and world business experience. Published January 12, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Hollywood still in own bubble

Cal Thomas reflects what most Americans think of Hollywood elites telling us folks in the real world what idiots we are for voting for Donald Trump ("Meryl Streep behaves as if elected to office," Web, Jan. 11). It will take a greater suspension of disbelief for me to see a movie featuring Meryl Streep or any other blathering liberal 'luminary' in film. Like Mr. Thomas, I prefer to watch the movies I choose from the luxury of my living room sofa. Published January 12, 2017

Kate’s Law will give justice for the slain innocents

If Tomas Martinez-Maldonado isn't the poster child for Kate's Law, he should be. He's enmeshed in the toils of the law now to answer the charge that he brutally raped a 13-year-old girl on a Greyhound bus in Kansas last September. Published January 12, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Importing parts makes us vulnerable

Don't tell my friends or relatives, but I voted for Donald Trump. One of the reasons was that he was, surprisingly, the only candidate talking about the loss of American jobs to other countries. Published January 11, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Agencies not unanimous on hacking

"Trust, but verify" is an old Russian proverb famously quoted by President Ronald Reagan. However, the time for trust is past. Should we trust the Iranian government when it embraces taqiyya (lying to deceive "unbelievers")? Should we trust the Russian government when it annexes Crimea and invades Ukraine? The new normal for our time is "Don't trust, and verify if possible." Published January 11, 2017

EDITORIAL: Trump’s ‘intelligence’ file

Anything anyone can make up about Donald Trump goes. That's the "moral" of the latest speculation about the sins of the Donald, his chief sin being that he defeated Hillary Clinton and the Democrats in November.Anything anyone can make up about Donald Trump goes. EDITORIAL: Obama’s long goodbye

"Parting is such sweet sorrow," says Juliet to Romeo in Shakespeare's telling of it. And so it is, but Barack Obama's impending departure from the national stage does not necessarily pierce the heart in the same way. Many Americans prefer the message of Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks: "How can I miss you when you won't go away?" Published January 11, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: A lemon of a law

Why should it take more than a day to repeal Obamacare? "We the People" have been clamoring for its removal for seven long years. Could it be that Congress, the Supreme Court and the Obama administration and its aides are not required to participate in it, while the rest of us are forced? Published January 10, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Not much to miss about Obama

Thankfully a new president will be sworn in on Jan. 20. The soon-to-be-former president, elected under the pretense of "hope and change," will move on to shamefully make undeserved millions of dollars. His tenure was wrought with bigotry, lies, pettiness, party politics, blame, vindictiveness and self-serving decisions. Published January 10, 2017

EDITORIAL: Attacking with popguns

The Democrats took their best shots Tuesday at Sen. Jeff Sessions, the president-elect's nominee for U.S. attorney general, and demonstrated only that it's difficult for a gang that can't shoot straight to do much damage with popguns that only fire blanks. Published January 10, 2017
