LETTER TO THE EDITOR: History will see Obama clearly

Newsweek's print publication closed its doors in late 2016. Despite its liberal reputation, it had recently found the guts to speak the truth about President Obama's agenda. In his final column for the print edition, Matt Patterson wrote that future historians will ask how a man as devoid of professional accomplishments as Mr. Obama could beguile so many, making them believe that he could manage the world's greatest economy, lead the most powerful military and be leader of the free world. In this Nov. 18, 2016, photo, the U.S. Capitol dome is seen at sunset on Capitol Hill in Washington. President-elect Donald Trump promises big tax cuts, a border wall and massive spending on infrastructure. That’s a recipe for bigger deficits that fiscal conservative Republicans have railed against during President Barack Obama’s tenure. Republicans in Congress must quickly implement Trump agenda

Congressmen love recess almost as much as the kids do, and no one knows for sure what either Congress or the kids will do when the bell finally rings and they return to their seats. With the opening of the 115th Congress, there's high anticipation that Congress will settle down to conduct the nation's business like adults. Published January 2, 2017

DNC in a race to the bottom

Once they get over their post-election pout (and even if they can't, and don't), the Democrats must choose a new chairman of the Democratic National Committee. The two top contenders, Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota and Secretary of Labor Tom Perez, represent that great distinction without a difference. Published January 2, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Punishing children for fathers’ sins

I am a retired Department of Justice lawyer, a former judge's law clerk and a with-honors law-school graduate. I am not your ordinary crackpot. I want to call attention to the last paragraph in Article III of our Constitution. It bans "corruption of blood," prohibiting the punishment of children in case their parents are convicted of treason. Published January 2, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Obama vindictive down to the wire

President Obama is doing dirty tricks by trying to thwart President-elect Donald Trump's promised agenda even before Mr. Trump is sworn in on Jan. 20. For instance, Mr. Obama recently banned all offshore oil drilling in an attempt to hurt Mr. Trump's promise to America that he will use all forms of energy to get the United States energy-independent. Vladimir Putin’s lesson in score-settling

Settling scores is always petty, whether by pouty teenagers, embittered ex-spouses or soon-to-be former presidents. Barack Obama is making himself look small and insignificant when he could be looking like a big man making a graceful exit. Published January 1, 2017

A new sticker designates a gender neutral bathroom at Nathan Hale high school Tuesday, May 17, 2016, in Seattle. President Obama’s directive ordering schools to accommodate transgender students has been controversial in some places but since 2012 Seattle has mandated that transgender students be able to use of the bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice. Nearly half of the district’s 15 high schools already have gender neutral bathrooms and one high school has had a transgender bathroom for 20 years. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)

North Carolina stands its ground on bathroom bill

There once was a time, and not so long ago, when men and women who violated the well-understood ways that society is organized would refrain from challenging the normal behavior standards, or do as they like and be treated accordingly, as social outcasts. Published January 1, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Time to stop blaming GOP

I think it's fair to say that the majority of Americans are fed up with the Democratic "progressivism" that has resulted in many of the problems we now have. The fact of the matter is that the Democrats don't like or want to accept any blame for anything that's wrong. They constantly blame the Republicans for everything, and they seem to believe the Democrats should govern forever. Published January 1, 2017

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Left’s nuclear hypocrisy

Last May I heard that the United States was embarking on a $1-trillion, 30-year "modernization" of our nuclear arsenal, yet there has been barely a word about it from the mainstream press. Then, as noted by Rowan Scarborough recently, the Pentagon laid out the Obama administration's plan for the $450-billion, 20-year plan to "modernize our strategic deterrence capabilities ... Secretary of State John Kerry speaks at the State Department, in Washington, Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016. Stepping into a raging diplomatic argument, Kerry staunchly defended the Obama administration's decision to allow the U.N. Security Council to declare Israeli settlements illegal and warned that Israel's very future as a democracy is at stake. (AP Photo/Andrew Harnik)

Obama’s one-two punch to Israel

That's quite a one-two punch President Obama has organized at the White House. Barack Obama applied the knife to the back of Israel, and then John Kerry, the secretary of State, arrives to give the blade a lingering, painful twist — just in case the Jews didn't get the point. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Carrie Fisher will be missed

For Carrie Fisher, who passed away Tuesday, it was either the best of times or the worst of times ("Carrie Fisher, Star Wars' Princess Leia, dead at 60," Web, Dec. 27). Ms. Fisher was born to famous parents — Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher — and reached movie stardom at a young age as Princess Leia of the "Star Wars" series. In addition to being an actress, she was a prolific author and an accomplished screenwriter. Published December 29, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Roger Clemens worthy of honor

I vividly recall a snarling Rep. Elijah Cummings, Maryland Democrat, taking baseball pitching great Roger "Rocket" Clemens to task in a congressional hearing for refusing to admit to having used prohibited substances, as alleged by Brian McNamee, a former trainer. In the manner of shysters, Mr. Cummings darkly reminded the witness that he was under oath. Published December 29, 2016

Donald Trump’s inauguration will go on

Media gossips report that Donald Trump is having trouble recruiting Hollywood celebrities to entertain guests at the inauguration. The likes of Elton John, KISS, Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Garth Brooks and Justin Timberlake have been more or less reliably reported to be still nursing snits and pouts, unable to come to terms with the election results, and will be missing in Washington on Jan. 20. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Universities teaching racism

I would urge every parent who has a child at Drexel University to pull him or her out and save their money, lest their children become racists comparable to Barack Obama ("Drexel University professor calls for 'white genocide' on Christmas Eve," Web, Dec. 26). Published December 28, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Same old left

I want to thank David Keene for his op-ed "Unchanged and unbending campus radicals" (Web, Dec. 27). The Washington Times has gained a new regular reader owing to Mr. Keene's disheartening report of events stifling free speech at the University of Wisconsin. The tactics described in the piece are akin to the ones fostered by communists in Russia, Cuba and China. Published December 28, 2016

When asked in an interview that aired Sunday on "60 Minutes" about the "crooked" and "corrupt" claims by Donald Trump and numerous other Republicans, Hillary Clinton said she is being held to higher standards of ethics than other people. (Associated Press)

Obama thinks media was biased against Hillary Clinton

President Obama, still on the scout for meaning in what happened to the Democrats in November, suggests now that Hillary Clinton lost because of media bias. If the president actually believes that, he's surely the only man in America who does. Published December 28, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: All holiday wishes well-meaning

Earlier this week, as I was saying goodbye to one of my clients, I wished them a "Merry Christmas." They replied in kind and added somewhat jokingly what a relief it was to be able to say that without the fear of offending anyone. This got me thinking: What could possibly be offensive about saying "Merry Christmas"? Published December 27, 2016

Taxicabs will survive by learning to compete with Uber, Lyft

A century ago dealers in horses and manufacturers of buggies and buggy whips took a sad story to the politicians: The newfangled manufacturers of horseless carriages are driving them out of business. Somebody has to do something. Published December 27, 2016
