LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: These weapons not ‘assault rifles’

I expect better of The Washington Times than to blindly repeat the liberal myth that stores are selling "assault weapons" ("Outdoors stores quietly continue to sell assault weapons," Web, March 13). Military select-fire assault weapons such as the M16, and M4 are by definition capable of firing "fully automatic" (i.e., emptying the entire clip with one press of the trigger). Virtually no gun stores sell these; the few "Class III" dealers who are allowed to do so require a special federal license and a personal recommendation from the local chief of police. Republican Rick Saccone thanks supporters at the party watching the returns for a special election being held for the Pennsylvania 18th Congressional District vacated by Republican Tim Murphy, Tuesday, March 13, 2018, in McKeesport, Pa. A razor's edge separated Democrat Conor Lamb and Saccone Tuesday night in their closely watched special election in Pennsylvania, where a surprisingly strong bid by first-time candidate Lamb was testing Donald Trump's sway in a GOP stronghold. EDITORIAL: Republicans get a splash of ice water after loss in Pennsylvania

The Democrats have proved twice that they can win congressional seats with a Republican playbook. The Grand Old Party campaigned for years with the mantra, "vote Republican, we're not as bad as you think." The plea often failed. Republicans just didn't know how bad a lot of voters thought they were. Published March 14, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Learn from Tillerson firing

Unfortunately the final statement of Rex Tillerson as secretary of state was an ill-concealed attack on President Donald Trump and his policies ("Tillerson urges State Department officials to forge ahead with 'integrity,'" Web, March 13). This was a case of two strong-minded men who had major differences in foreign policy, with both having little experience in the area. Mr. Tillerson's short stay brings to mind a variation on a familiar statement: Appoint in haste and fire at will. Published March 14, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Can SNAP

It is time to say goodbye and good riddance to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). There are better ways to spend the $70 billion that SNAP receives. I don't believe the box-food program would work as a replacement, though. The poor and disabled who use SNAP would be better off using food pantries for their food needs. Published March 14, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: No peace without justice

A "peace treaty" between President Trump and "Glorious Leader" Kim Jong-un that ignores the human rights abuses in North Korea is meaningless. That issue must be addressed in any talks of peace. Published March 13, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Wind energy worth the birds

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is concerned about the number of birds killed by wind turbines ("Zinke says Interior should be a partner with oil companies," Web, March 6). However, Mr. Zinke might be surprised to know that the National Audubon Society "strongly supports properly sited wind power" as a way to address climate change. Proper siting means avoiding migratory pathways and environments that could harm endangered species. Published March 13, 2018

Thousands of employees of the U.N agency for Palestinian refugees demonstrate in support of their organization following U.S. funding cuts in Gaza City, Monday, Jan. 29, 2018. Earlier this month, the Trump administration slashed $60 million of a planned $125 million funding installment for 2018. EDITORIAL: Palestinians accuse Israel of child-massacre

The Palestinians, perhaps in the spirit of the approaching Passover season, have revived the ancient "blood libel" accusing the Jews of using the blood of Christian babies in their recipe for matzos. Published March 12, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Model democracy with term limits

The Chinese dictatorship is getting ready to eliminate term limits for its leader. Without term limits President Xi Jinping can rule for as long as he likes — just like Mao Zedong and the emperors. I am a big supporter of term limits. I think all elected officials should be limited to either one or two non-consecutive terms. Our president can prove that he is against authoritarianism and Communism and a supporter of democracy by limiting himself to one term. Published March 12, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Let true free trade reign

Donald Lambro slammed President Trump's announced tariffs on steel and aluminum imports ("There's nothing conservative about trade protectionism," Web, March 8). Yes, we all understand the "free trade" orthodoxy that a country benefits from having no tariffs even if its trading partner imposes tariffs on imports into its own country. But it is equally true that both countries benefit even more if neither country imposes tariffs — what Mr. Trump calls "fair trade." Published March 12, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: No more unfair free trade

Conservative economists just don't get it ("Trump's really bad idea," Web, March 6). Free trade is only free when normal market dynamics are in effect. Once a nation's government intervenes with production subsidies or its own excessive import tariffs, there is no longer equitable "free trade." Published March 12, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: ‘Deathless’ meat the answer?

Regardless of what one thinks of the sci-fi thought experiment of cruelty-free cannibalism, there really shouldn't be any debate over the benefits of growing real animal meat without animals ("'Soylent' Dawkins? Atheist mulls 'taboo against cannibalism' ending as lab-grown meat improves," Web, March 6). Published March 11, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Obama cronies not above law

We need a big push to make sure Obama-era officials are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for their attempts to thwart the efforts of Congress and the State Department inspector general to hold them accountable. Published March 11, 2018

EDITORIAL: Donald Trump had a big week, now taking on Kim Jong-un

Donald Trump had a splendid, terrific, very good week by any president's standards. The economic news was stunning, with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting that 313,000 new jobs were created in February, the unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.1 percent, with inflation still at bay, and unemployment sank to record lows among blacks and Hispanics who needed such a week most. Published March 11, 2018

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Reassignment surgery effective

Contrary to your reporting in "Skeptics urge caution as transgender surgeries skyrocket" (Web, March 5), there is a scientifically based consensus among medical experts and researchers that transition-related surgeries are safe, effective and medically necessary. Published March 8, 2018

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: School not always best teacher

Aram Bakshian's review of Bryan Caplan's book, "The Case Against Education: Why the Education System is a Waste of Time and Money" ("The educator has no clothes," Web, March 7) is on the money. Published March 8, 2018
