LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Fix whole gun problem, not part

Owning a gun is a right that everyone should have ("Voices of the gun," Web, March 27). While I do not believe in repealing the Second Amendment, I do believe in gun control -- but it should go beyond making "the background system stronger by making sure it has all the records of violent criminals and those who are found by a court to have a dangerous mental illness," as your editorial quotes Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, as saying. Why? Because merely proposing to change the background system will not decrease shootings. Published April 3, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Congress is the problem

Our national debt is staggering. But it is Congress that is at fault for spending on unconstitutional things. If Congress only appropriated funds for that which it is authorized to do by the U.S. Constitution, we could start paying off our debt. That we do not have spending cuts is not the fault of the Constitution, so changing the Constitution by having a constitutional convention, as some have suggested, is not the solution to our debt. The solution is to change Congress. Published April 3, 2018

EDITORIAL: California begins to shrink

Californians have always lived with the fear that a really big rumble along the San Andreas fault, and there goes Hollywood's tinsel, San Francisco's templed hills and the wild northern California coast, sliding headlong into the Pacific. Published April 2, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Reaping what radicals sowed

To understand the historical origins of the school-shooter-broken-home connection ("Link between mass shooters, absent fathers ignored by anti-gun activists," Web, March 27) one must think back to the end of World War II. Then, returning heroes, educated under the GI bill, started families, bought homes, built businesses and came to be known as "the Greatest Generation." A common saying during this time was, "A man's word is his bond." Published April 2, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Disarmament despots’ first move

John Paul Stevens, retired Supreme Court justice, recently called for the repeal of the Second Amendment and is encouraging anti-gun protesters to do the same ("Former Supreme Court Justice Stevens: Repeal the Second Amendment," Web, March 27). Justice Stevens argued that the amendment — which states that "a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed" — is a "relic of the 18th century." Justice Stevens is emphatically wrong. Published April 2, 2018

EDITORIAL: A politically incorrect lesson from ‘Roseanne’

The revolution, when it comes, won't be on television, to the disappointment of couch potatoes everywhere, but there's already "the resistance," which is on a channel near you. In the 14 months since Donald Trump became president, "resistance" programming has dominated the air waves, and cable and satellite, too. Published April 1, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Article V the answer

Thank you, ruling elite, for kicking the can down the road again with the staggering $1.3-trillion omnibus and making all of us taxpayers subject to the insatiable appetite of Beltway politicians. The total debt now owed by the United States is $21 trillion-plus and counting. Published April 1, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: GPOs a solution to rising costs

Despite some progress and a decline in the number of new shortages, critical prescription-drug shortages continue to jeopardize patient access to medications. Unfortunately "When shortages strike medical supplies" (Web, March 14) is long on conspiracy theory and short on actual supply-chain experience or solutions. Published April 1, 2018

EDITORIAL: The Great Deceiver’s advice

This work presents issues of faith from the perspective of Screwtape, a fictional devil, in a letter to his nephew Wormwood, a junior tempter. Published March 29, 2018

Ahead of Easter, celebrated by both Orthodox and Catholic believers on April 16 processions of priests clad in golden robes carrying foliage on Palm Sunday in a recreation of Jesus' ride into Jerusalem, mixed with more commercial flavored celebrations like an Easter fair outside the giant palace built by late Communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu where entertainers strutted around wearing giant rabbit heads.(AP Photo/Vadim Ghirda)

EDITORIAL: The Passion of the Christ

Straightaway in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered Him to Pilate. Published March 29, 2018

Dan Soucek, left, and Brent Jackson, right, review historical maps during The Senate Redistricting Committee for the 2016 Extra Session in the Legislative Office Building at the N.C. General Assembly, in Raleigh, N.C. Federal judges ruled Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, that North Carolina's congressional district map drawn by legislative Republicans is illegally gerrymandered because of excessive partisanship that gave GOP a rock-solid advantage for most seats and must quickly be redone. EDITORIAL: Taking politics out of politics

If he were with us today, Elbridge Gerry would have no doubt filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in behalf of Democrats in Maryland to defend the way they drew the congressional districts expressly to transform the Republican-friendly 6th Congressional District into a reliably Democratic district. Published March 28, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Amendment not militia-only

If the U.S. Constitution stated, "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear children, shall not be infringed," would gun-ban activists assert that only militia members may have children? Published March 28, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: No more intrusion from businesses

I am glad that social media users and government officials are now interested in some sort of right to privacy ("Facebook under fire as prosecutors, Congress confirm investigation," Web, March 26). I don't think online companies, such as Facebook, should be allowed to collect any personal information or track the online activities of their users. In fact, I don't think that "off-line" companies should be allowed to store, use or sell the personal information of their customers, either. Published March 28, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Really ‘drain swamp’ in November

While there is a great deal of blame to go around for the monstrous budget "deal," we should not forget ourselves. Albert Einstein once defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result each time. The political version is sending the same people back to Washington and expecting them to behave differently. Published March 27, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Don’t change policy now

Under the Obama administration the Federal Reserve determined that the economy had a real risk of declining — so it greatly lowered interest rates and decided to print $3 trillion in U.S. currency. If the Fed had not done this and the forecast had come true, the prior administration would have been forced to improve its economic program or face a real economic problem. Published March 27, 2018

With suggestive statements, cryptic tweets, provocative lawsuits and must-see television interviews, Trump’s political foils are using some of his own tactics to grab - and keep - the spotlight. EDITORIAL: Trump’s expulsion of 60 Russians is needed recognition of an enemy

Who says Donald Trump can't get tough with Russians? The president's order on Monday to send 60 Russian "diplomats" home, joining Canada, Poland, Italy, Denmark, France and Germany among other European nations, is welcome solidarity with Britain. It's in answer to the poisoning of a onetime Russian spy and his daughter as they sat on a public bench March 4 in the English provincial town of Salisbury. Britain had earlier expelled 23 "diplomats." Published March 26, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: No online or show ‘loopholes’

When will gun-control activists get informed of actual facts? There is no "gun show loophole" or "online purchase loophole." For online purchases, a seller must ship the gun to a licensed dealer, who must then run a background check before handing the gun over to the buyer. A dealer at a gun show must also run a background check before the gun changes hands. Sometimes these are completed within minutes, sometimes in a day or two. Published March 26, 2018

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: If true, affairs are private matter

Some women of highly questionable virtue are seeking to smear President Trump by disclosing lurid and prurient details of affairs they allege they had with him several years ago when he was a private citizen. There is no doubt that their puppeteers are the ones who seek to drive Mr. Trump from office and sought to illegally deny him election victory. Published March 26, 2018
