LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Solution to Cyprus dispute is no ‘mistake’

In blasting the U.N. peace initiative undertaken by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan by claiming that "everybody recognizes now that it was a mistake," Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis shows he is out of touch with the views of Washington, Brussels and Turtle Bay. EDITORIAL: The misery of April 15

April 15 ought to be one of the calendar's happiest days, particularly after a long and brutal winter. Instead it makes many Americans long for a day in January. Published April 14, 2014

EDITORIAL: Wasteful spending is why your taxes are so high

Some of us waited until the last minute to stuff a tax return in an envelope and drop it in the mail at the stroke of midnight, but we share something with those who e-filed months ago. We all wonder why our taxes are so high. Published April 14, 2014

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Lerner won’t face meaningful punishment

Despite mounting evidence of collusion between Lois Lerner and Democrats (in both Congress and the executive branch) to silence conservative organizations seeking tax-exempt status, Ms. Lerner is well-insulated from being punished for it. Published April 14, 2014

While serving as Iowa secretary of state, Matt Schultz waged a long battle for access to a federal database to help identify noncitizens who voted illegally. Now it is a federal commission that is asking states for information to determine the number of noncitizen voters. (Associated Press/File)

EDITORIAL: Democrats deny voter fraud. Ask North Carolina

It's an article of the faith of the Democrats that voter fraud is nothing to worry about because it never happens. Kim Strach, the North Carolina director of elections, has living proof --- and some dead proof ---otherwise. Published April 11, 2014

EDITORIAL: Goodbye to Sebelius, face of Obamacare disaster

Kathleen Sebelius said goodbye to her colleagues at the Department of Health and Human Services at a ceremony Friday in the White House Rose Garden. She was in the midst of telling a touching story, and paused when she flipped through the pages of her prepared remarks. "Unfortunately, a page is missing," she finally said. Oil field workers may be having more rigs to climb in the future. Energy leaders now, more than ever, are portraying oil and gas production as a key way of generating tax revenue, spurring job creation and saving the nation from going off the looming “fiscal cliff.” States such as Pennsylvania and North Dakota continue to expand fracking, creating tens of thousands of jobs and pumping millions of dollars into local economies. Any federal action to limit fracking would pour cold water on the growth in those states and give fresh ammunition to the vocal environmental opposition in New York, California and elsewhere. EDITORIAL: Capping California’s oil

At 8 percent, the California unemployment rate is higher than in all but three other states. The Legislature apparently likes it that way. Published April 11, 2014

Buckyballs

EDITORIAL: Buckyballs and the risks of unsafe government

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is run by humorless folks who are pleased to ban little toys on the remote chance that a child somewhere might skin a knee or bruise an elbow. They're out to bubble-wrap society. Published April 10, 2014

EDITORIAL: Letterman, Colbert and lefty late-night ‘laughs’

Some comedy aficionados and fans of late-night talk are in mourning over David Letterman's announcement that he will retire from the "Late Show" in 2015. His departure would leave conservatives breathing sighs of relief if he were not to be replaced by someone who tilts even further left. Published April 10, 2014

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Pelosi needs refresher course in history

With her recent statement that "our Founders sacrificed everything — their lives, their liberty, their sacred honor — for a democracy," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is playing fast and loose with history. One would think that a former speaker of the House would be more careful. Published April 10, 2014
