EDITORIAL: The academic recession: Big bucks, little knowledge
A new survey by the employment website AfterCollege finds that 83 percent of this season's new graduates have no jobs lined up, despite their expensive diplomas in hand. Published May 20, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: VA is out of alignment
The Veterans Administration debacle has been a work in progress for years. Published May 20, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Church attendance should be priority
"Americans tend to fib about church attendance, study finds" (Web, May 19) was interesting, but based on those we elect, I'm wondering if a majority of Americans even attends church. Published May 20, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Cable apps don’t constitute choice
In their May 15 op-ed essay, "Switching off an outdated cable rule," Rep. Bob Latta, Ohio Republican, and Republican Federal Communications Commission member Ajit Pai advocate ending an FCC rule that allows consumers to choose their cable-reception device. Published May 20, 2014
EDITORIAL: Squeezing the gunsmiths
When he was an ambitious state senator in Illinois, Barack Obama despised White House power grabs. It was so Washington. "The biggest problem that we're facing right now," he said in 2008, "has to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all, and that's what I intend to reverse when I'm president of the United States of America." Published May 19, 2014
EDITORIAL: Fleeing the nuttiness of Maryland
If Maryland veers farther left, it might one day fall into Deep Creek Lake, out where there's room for an empty wasteland. Marylanders weary of do-good taxes and the notions and policies of the looney left have been packing up to leave. It's good for the U-Haul business, but not for anyone else. Published May 19, 2014
EDITORIAL: Selective prosecution of Dinesh D’Souza
Lady Justice's blindfold sometimes slips. No argument about that. But now she has thrown it aside to prosecute -- some would say persecute --; Dinesh D'Souza, a successful conservative author and filmmaker, on flimsy charges of violating campaign finance law. Whether guilty or not, the fact that Mr. D'Souza has been singled out for prosecution while others skate past freely reveals President Obama's thumb on the famous lady's scale. Published May 19, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Obama: Nothing to fear but record
President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously said, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." When President Obama leaves office, he will have nothing to fear but history. Published May 19, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: More like Begich needed in Senate
I am so very proud of Sen. Mark Begich, Alaska Democrat, for joining Senate Republicans in calling for an audit of the Federal Reserve. Published May 19, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: New York Times silent on Benghazi
The New York Times should finally change its slogan from "All the news that's fit to print" to "All the news that supports the Democratic agenda." While it would be easy for anyone to accept the Obama administration's account of the events of Sept. 11, 2012, in the days immediately following the murderous attacks on our consultate in Benghazi, a cadre of evidence not supporting the administration's narrative was available by mid-September. Published May 19, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Cut red tape on mineral mining
President Obama is right to seek to accelerate the approvals process for much-needed infrastructure upgrades to our bridges, roads and railways, as outlined in Dave Boyer's recent article ("Obama to push for more highway spending, blame GOP on blocked bill," Web, May 14). However, to make these large-scale projects a reality once they are approved, the United States will require ample and stable supplies of domestic raw materials, including iron ore, nickel and copper. These are crucial to the development of our nation's infrastructure. Published May 19, 2014
EDITORIAL: Traffic-ticket camera kickback scam hits red light
Those big, ugly early birds began circling over the corporate headquarters of the revenue-camera industry last week when federal prosecutors announced that felony corruption charges had been filed against the Chicago city official in charge of one of the world's largest red-light camera operations. Published May 16, 2014
EDITORIAL: Greening farm and field with ‘rural energy’ boondoggle
President Obama wants farmers to be greener, and he's willing to spend whatever it takes to do it. Published May 16, 2014
EDITORIAL: Putting a stop to civil asset-forfeiture abuse
When cops can help themselves to cash, cars, boats and houses of citizens who have never been charged with a crime, the system is badly broken. Published May 16, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Hillary Clinton would continue husband’s legacy
While fending off charges that she suffered brain damage from a concussion, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, commenting on the recent Iranian nuclear deal, said recently, "No deal is better than a bad deal." Published May 16, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: VA scandal shows ‘single-payer’ dangers
The Veterans Affairs medical center scandal is a perfect example of single-payer, rationed health care. Published May 16, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Hollywood slow to see truth about Islamism
While Hollywood may have come finally to its senses with the realization that support of Shariah law is bad for the bottom line nationally and internationally, I continue to be appalled that a number of its luminaries and others in the entertainment industry have indulged in anti-Israel rhetoric and support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against the state of Israel. Published May 16, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Marriage means one man, one woman
States should stop issuing marriage licenses and just issue civil-union licenses to all who want them. Published May 16, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: ‘Dropping’ Benghazi is tacit condoning
I agree with those who say Congress needs to "move on" where the Benghazi investigation is concerned; meaning, I think our representatives must accomplish the people's business in the productive, bipartisan manner for which they were elected. Published May 16, 2014
EDITORIAL: South Africa must move beyond Zuma
South Africa's African National Congress (ANC) picked up another clear win last week, enabling the party of Nelson Mandela to continue the winning streak that began with the country's first democratic elections in 1994. Published May 15, 2014
