President Abraham Lincoln was not ashamed of the United States or God. In his Gettysburg address Lincoln said, " ... that this nation under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." EDITORIAL: Now, to lead

Midterm elections are about incumbent presidents even when they aren't on the ballot. President Obama acknowledged this when he declared that "every single one" of his policies would be up for a vote Tuesday even though his name wouldn't be on anybody's ballot. On election eve, the White House hedged with the claim that since many of the closest Senate races were in states Mr. Obama didn't carry two years ago the results had to be taken with salt. EDITORIAL: Beware the Ebola snake-oil remedies

The quality of mercy is always strained, but snake oil comes raw and unfiltered, harvested from ever more lethal snakes. You might think the accounts of the suffering of those stricken with the Ebola virus would soften the hearts of snake-oil salesmen. Published November 4, 2014

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Paul’s critique of GOP won’t win black votes

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, like many other Republicans, would like to encourage more blacks to support Republican candidates or officeholders at all levels. He faults the "Republican brand," implying that the black community would be much more supportive of Republican candidates if only they would interact more with that community. The U.S. Constitution requires the separation of church and state. So what should be done in the case of Islam, where the doctrines of religion and politics have been ostensibly intertwined, so that both religious and political elements of Muslims can be treated according to U.S. law and the Constitution? What must be done to create the separation of mosque and state? Published November 4, 2014

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: If you like Obama, vote for Warner

Rep. J. Randy Forbes, Virginia Republican, was elected and went to Washington with certain convictions, including religious beliefs similar to those held by the Founding Fathers. To Mr. Forbes' credit, these beliefs and policies have not changed, which is quite the exception in Washington. Published November 3, 2014
