EDITORIAL: Obama’s fumbled pivot to Asia
Hillary Clinton's famous "pivot to Asia" never made the turn needed for Barack Obama's administration to face up to the threat to Asia, which is China's expanding regional aggression. China's mammoth size, of both territory and people, makes it the heavy. "When China spits," the ancient wisdom goes, "Asia swims." Published December 3, 2015
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Immigration law being ignored
The Immigration and Nationality Act passed June 27, 1952, revised the laws relating to immigration to and naturalization in the United States. That act, which became Public Law 414, established both the law and the intent of Congress regarding the immigration of aliens to the United States, and it remains in effect today. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: No outrage for ‘black-on-black’ murder
A grand jury has indicted Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke on charges of first-degree murder. Probable cause criminal liability now attaches. Legal claims against the city of Chicago have been settled with the family of the deceased, Laquan McDonald. Published December 2, 2015
EDITORIAL: Congress tightens tax abuse of Americans who live, work abroad
Doubling down on Americans living and working abroad is a way for the Internal Revenue Service to squeeze the turnip a little harder in pursuit of a little more blood. The Obama administration, which has never met a tax it couldn't love, included something called the "Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act," or FATCA, in the so-called stimulus package in 2010. EDITORIAL: Baltimore on trial
The first of six police officers — three black men and three white men charged in the death of Freddie Gray — went on trial in Baltimore Monday. The verdict in the first case will likely set the tone for the remainder of the trials and determine whether "Charm City" can regain its composure following an arrest that set off three days of rioting and set off the Black Lives Matter movement. Justice, fully blind, is the answer to what ails Baltimore. Published December 2, 2015
EDITORIAL: The distorted story of Israel
The Israeli-Palestinian confrontation is complicated, and would be even without the bad faith that is the region's chief export. Many elements in the conflict go back to the 1930s, and are layered one atop the other, making peace impossible and even cease-fire difficult. Published December 1, 2015
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Disincentivize terrorism
Terrorist attacks can be deterred by increasing the price the terrorists pay for their actions. As it stands, terrorists willingly commit these atrocities, confident that their actions and subsequent suicide will gain them respect, martyrdom and a spot in heaven. In other words, they pay very little for their actions because they believe they are justified, and they only kill themselves (in addition to all the "infidels," of course). LETTER TO THE EDITOR: ‘Typical’ people can learn from ‘disabled’
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which ensures that students with disabilities have access to a free and appropriate public education in the same manner as all other children. My beautiful daughter Chloe was born in 2003 with a diagnosis of Down syndrome. Published December 1, 2015
EDITORIAL: ‘Diary of Anne Frank’ rights expire soon
The Diary of Anne Frank was one of the most moving, and most heartbreaking, stories to come out of World War II. Anne, then 12, and her mother, father and sister, took refuge in a tiny, cramped attic with four others in Amsterdam when the Nazis overran the Netherlands. The next year she began keeping a diary, writing her secret thoughts about life and collecting favorite fragments from writers she admired. Published December 1, 2015
EDITORIAL: World leaders try to save global warming scam
"Saving the world" is the stuff of comic books, and some famous egos are firmly rooted in fantasy. Even the pope. The "global warming" fad has turned a global spotlight on the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris, and presidents and prime ministers are primed there to demonstrate their kryptonic super powers by rescuing the world from the depredations of human industry. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Obama yet to step up on terror threat
There have been terrorist attacks in Egypt, Mali, France, Lebanon, Somalia and myriad other nations. Where is our president on this crisis? He remains passive, petulant and annoyed when asked why his containment strategy isn't working. Published November 30, 2015
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: ‘Dumbing down’ of U.S. reversible
The dumbing down of America appears to be in its final stages. I'm not saying Americans are stupid or of lower intellect than other so-called developed nations; rather, this is the outcome of an insidious process of feeding America a bunch of nonsensical, vulgar television shows, movies, video games and social invective that has polluted the minds of young and old alike. EDITORIAL: Allies against ISIS getting it together
The soldiers of the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, have been on a roll, mostly against junior varsities, but now they have challenged the A-team. They may soon get a chance to see how tough they really are. Blowing up a Russian passenger plane infuriated Vladimir Putin and the Paris attacks enraged Francois Hollande. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Obama no match for terrorists
Three cheers for President Obama for showing his mettle in opposition to the Islamic State by holding a conclave in Paris to discuss the weather. Published November 29, 2015
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: White House losing credibility
Among the more heartbreaking scandals emerging from the Obama presidency is the widespread loss of public trust in the veracity of what the president and top officials in his administration say to "We the people." Published November 29, 2015
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Abortion doesn’t improve lives
Contrary to critics at Ohio State University, Madison Gesiotto's op-ed of last month defending black American children killed by abortionists is the very opposite of racist ("The number one killer of black Americans," Web, Oct. 23). The critics, however, are guilty of age discrimination. Published November 29, 2015
EDITORIAL:The risks of unvetted refugees
The liberals among us, who now call themselves "progressives," having blighted the old and honored word "liberal," are a curious lot. They make contradictory and illogical arguments to advance their wishes and dreams and dismiss those who disagree as wrong-headed, racist or worse. Published November 29, 2015
EDITORIAL: More bad news from Cuba
The continuing crisis in the Middle East has pushed the continuing crisis in Cuba off the front pages, but it's nevertheless a disaster, and getting worse. Not since the Mariel Boatlift of 1994 has the hemisphere seen anything like it. Thousands of Cubans are abandoning the island, often selling their last belongings to put together the $15,000 needed to reach some part of Central America. Published November 29, 2015
EDITORIAL: Obama’s Syrian resettlement plan threatens national security
Barack Obama is blowing past all signs of caution on the left lanes of the road of American politics. That's a dog-bites-man headline that by now is common knowledge. He no longer cares what Americans think of his leadership. His "my way or the highway" handling of the Syrian refugee crisis, which could endanger the homeland, seals it. Published November 26, 2015
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Real enemy is in White House
Having had President Obama in office for almost seven years, the American public should no longer be confused about who the real enemy is. During his reign in office — yes, reign is the correct description of his time in the White House — Mr. Obama has abandoned all the principles that have made this a great nation. Denigrating our democratic friends internationally while coddling the perpetrators of terror, he has destroyed the credibility of our nation and our stated mission. Published November 26, 2015
