EDITORIAL: The sisterhood called to arms for Hillary Clinton
Hillary Clinton declined to say last week whether she agrees with Madeleine Albright's theology, that "a special place in hell" is reserved for women who won't vote for a woman, but she insists that she doesn't want women to vote for her just because she's of the female persuasion. This was an unusual exercise in both diplomacy and theology, one former secretary of state assisting another. Life can get complicated in Washington. Published February 14, 2016
EDITORIAL: Venezuela waiting for Obama
Reality is writing a harsh chapter in the long and tortured history of Venezuela. What happens there is not just the occasional outside intervention to keep the peace. International companies, and not just American companies, are getting clobbered by the hapless manipulation of currency by a government rapidly moving toward chaos. Published February 11, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Renewable Fuel Standard a win-win
Ever since the Iowa caucuses, the oil industry's spinmeisters have ramped up their misinformation campaign regarding ethanol and the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) ("Renewable Fuel Standard deceit," Web, Feb. 8). Published February 11, 2016
EDITORIAL: Birds of prey circling Hillary’s Clinton’s campaign
Those are birds of prey beginning to circle over Hillary Clinton and her campaign, and nervous Democrats are beginning to think the unthinkable. Maybe the party just won't buy another Clinton. Published February 11, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Ruinous transformation deliberate
Thank you for running "Obama is no incompetent" by Don Feder (Web, Feb. 11). Mr. Feder's analysis is right on the money; President Obama knows exactly what he is doing. I believe he was certain, too, that his plans to "fundamentally" change this nation would succeed because he knew the mainstream media, liberal to its core, would support everything he did and never challenge him. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Candidates, answer Obama question
This nation is in serious trouble, both domestically and internationally. We have open borders, illegal immigration, a looming financial crisis with a national debt nearing $20 trillion and unfunded governmental obligations totaling more than $100 trillion. We also have growing welfare programs and a level of polarization never seen before in this country. Published February 10, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Women in combat unconscionable
I am the father of three women and the grandfather of three girls. I am also a retired Army officer who graduated from West Point and has seen combat. Therefore, when I heard that the Army chief of staff and the commandant of the Marine Corps had called for women to be subject to selective service, I became apoplectic. Published February 10, 2016
EDITORIAL: Self-driven cars are on the way
Machines with a mind of their own are the future, and self-driving automobiles will soon be sharing the road with cars and trucks with real drivers. Labor-saving devices are always welcome, and driving on roads in the congested communities where most Americans live is certainly a chore. Published February 10, 2016
EDITORIAL: Obama’s slick oil tax
When every problem looks like a shortage of cash, every solution looks like a tax. President Obama sees a $10 surcharge on every barrel of oil the nation consumes as the key to fixing America's transportation system. The dramatic decline in global oil prices has put money back into the pockets of Americans, and predictably, the president intends to seize what he imagines is his "fair share." LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Democrats scraping bottom of barrel
"There's a special place in hell for women who don't help each other." So declares Madeleine Albright, former U.S. secretary of state, diplomatic sage and dispenser of political wisdom, in her recent endorsement of Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential candidacy. Published February 9, 2016
EDITORIAL: War zone no game for children
Innocence, once lost, vanishes forever. Spoiling a child's only opportunity to laugh and play without the cares of adulthood is a crime. Many children are swept into the violence their parents unleashed across the world, and the fortunate ones cheat death only to endure wasted childhood years and a joyless life. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Importance of music understated
Throughout history music has played an important role in human development. It is \a primary element in nearly all of hummanity's diverse cultures. Scientists are discovering that in addition to the positive effects on human health, music enhances intelligence. Research shows that music is to the brain what physical exercise is to the human body. Published February 9, 2016
EDITORIAL: How the next president will shape the Supreme Court
The Republican presidential candidates have mostly ignored one of the most important issues the man (or woman) elected in November will face in his or her first term — filling vacancies on the U.S. Supreme Court. Hillary Clinton, however, has no reluctance to say that she will apply a litmus test in selecting nominees, and suggests that Barack Obama would be a good addition to the High Court. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Obama’s extremist-mosque misstep
I am befuddled by and totally outraged at the dense rhetoric in President Obama's thinking -- and in the thinking of the millions who believe a man with no experience and no known credentials for his current job. Published February 8, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: U.S. has social, ethical problems
If Donald Trump were to become president he would most likely make this country rich financially. Still, ancient Rome fell, wealthy but lacking morals; wrong was just as good as right in the public square. Published February 8, 2016
EDITORIAL: Is ‘New York values’ a synonym for anti-Semitism?
Modern America is an ethnic minefield, and everyone must mind his step. It's getting more dangerous as the presidential campaign moves toward crucial primaries in the bigger states. The unwary among us can step on one of those mines and blow holes in the peaceable land, and all unaware. Published February 8, 2016
EDITORIAL: Obama’s curious religious concerns
President Obama's selective attitude toward religious persecution is puzzling, even to those who are eager to give him the benefit of every doubt. He's eager to reassure peaceful Muslims in the United States that they are welcome among us. It's right and good for him to do that, though he could have moderated his hectoring tone. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: This ‘catch-and-release’ not George W. Bush’s
The lead paragraph in "Obama reinstates 'catch-and-release' policy for illegal immigrants" (Web, Feb. 4) appears to include a lie when paired with information in the next paragraph. The clear implication is that "catch-and-release" was a George W. Bush policy. In fact Bush inherited and subsequently ended the policy. Published February 7, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Knowledge gains up to students
Thank you, Michael Poliakoff, for pointing out the lack of capability of many college graduates ("College ignorance and the threat to liberty," Web, Feb. 3). While agreeing with the points Mr. Poliakoff makes, it should be noted that the problems he describes pervade the whole educational system and apply equally to middle and high schools. EDITORIAL: Hillary Clinton can’t find appeal
Willie Sutton, the famous bank robber of a bygone age, and Hillary Clinton are two of a kind. Someone, probably a psychology major working on a term paper, once asked Willie why he robbed banks. He answered simply, "because that's where the money is." Published February 7, 2016
