LETTER TO THE EDITOR: ‘Mean Girls’ politicos embarrassing

Former Massachusetts Gov . Mitt Romney's recent statement that there is good reason to believe there's a "bombshell" in Donald Trump's unreleased tax returns just sounds like sour grapes ("Mitt Romney hints at possible 'bombshell' in Donald Trump's taxes," Web, Feb. 25). Published March 1, 2016

EDITORIAL: Donald Trump KKK link is a cheap shot

This week has been open hunting season on Donald Trump. The elites of the Republican shooting party have been playing a game of "can you top this?" Everyone wants to be the Donald-killer. Some of the pundits have exhausted the thesaurus gathering synonyms for "bad." Published March 1, 2016

EDITORIAL: Foreign trade and domestic prosperity

International trade is the lifeblood of vibrant economies everywhere. The conventional wisdom is that the Republican Party is the party of business, but many Republicans look askance at foreign commerce. Donald Trump has skillfully exploited these concerns. That's a pity. With global conflict on the rise, there's much to worry about abroad, but trade among nations offers far more benefits to the American economy than harm. Nobody wants to shoot a customer, and nations don't, either. Published March 1, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Avoid liberty-thief candidates

It seems that in the year 2016 we have come full circle in our history since 1775. As Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders compete for the Democratic nomination to follow 'Barack the First' as U.S. president, Donald Trump pushes hard for the Republican nomination. Published March 1, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Boycotts work

I n a recent People magazine article actress Whoopi Goldberg was quoted as saying, "Boycotts -- to me -- are a pain in the butt." Obviously Ms. Goldberg does not appreciate how boycotts have positively shaped human history. They are the reason authors with racist mindset s no longer write offensive novels such as " The Story of Little Black Sambo ." Published February 29, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Stop treaty-violating Iran now

Overlooked before the recent Obama nuclear deal was the fact that since 2001 Iran has had at least 12 nuclear-capable, Kh-55 Russian-made cruise missiles capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to a range of up to 1,500 miles. These weapons were procured illegally from Ukraine and allow Iran to hit a target anywhere from New Delhi to Cairo. Published February 29, 2016

EDITORIAL: Politics at the Academy Awards

Nothing illustrates the trivialization of the American culture, such as survives, like the annual presentation of the Academy Awards. The deceit, sanctimony and pretense are writ large enough to make a Pharisee hide his face in the latest issue of Photoplay magazine. Published February 29, 2016

EDITORIAL: Replacing American workers with foreign labor an affront to decency

Few punishments are more macabre that being forced to "dig your own grave." That's gallows humor for describing the business practice of requiring laid-off workers train their replacements or else -- "or else" being losing their severance pay. But there's nothing funny about coercing anyone to connive in his own destruction. Published February 29, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Root of Donald Trump’s appeal

The oppressive tyranny of political correctness as a social-control mechanism has enjoyed a long run in American politics -- but under no administration has it flourished as powerfully or cruelly as it has under the administration of President Obama. Published February 28, 2016

EDITORIAL: Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz target Donald Trump too late

The late George McGovern told of walking into the airport in Minneapolis two or three days after losing all 50 states to Richard Nixon in 1972. A man and his 8-year-old son walked up to him, a friendly hand extended, and told him that he had voted for him and he was disappointed that he lost. The little boy looked up at Mr. McGovern and told him brightly: "Don't feel too bad. Second place is pretty good." Published February 28, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Bernie Sanders not really socialist

In "Socialism's strange appeal" (Web, Feb. 21), writer Stephen Moore asserts that Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and socialism "can't handle [the] reality" of economic freedom. While Mr. Moore gives us reasons to believe that socialism is bad, he never offers reasons to support his original claim, which he states at the beginning and end of the piece. If anything, this is simply a rant criticizing socialism and liberal politics. Published February 28, 2016

EDITORIAL: American oil for a reliable ally

The arrival in Israel of a cargo of sweet crude oil from the United States, dispatched from a joint Dutch-Swiss trading company, is the first American overseas shipment since the United States lifted its embargo on oil exports, and it has enormous geopolitical implications. The American shale revolution has cut natural gas and petroleum prices generally around the world, good news for consumers but the fallout is unpredictable. Published February 28, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: ‘War’ is on citizens

As the "war" declared on immigrants continues in this country, natural-born citizens of The United States are having their rights trampled. I, for one, am growing tired of having to produce a birth certificate at the age of 62 just to prove I am a citizen of my birth country. Published February 25, 2016
