LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Make vaccine voluntary
This COVID-19-spawned control over our lives -- which seems not to be ending -- is a test case for more dictatorship control, as with the mandatory inoculation. Published August 18, 2020
EDITORIAL: Democratic convention reinvention
Political party conventions, like the incoming tide, bring a surge of energy that has dissipated since the last quadrennial gathering. With crowds of loyalists, balloons, confetti and, most of all, the rock-star-like ascendance of the party's chosen champion, the confab launches the presidential campaign season designed to capture the White House. It's gone like a shattered dream, though, in the year of the coronavirus. Democrats have settled for a virtual convention, with all the sensation of a texted birthday wish. Published August 17, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: UAE, Israel ties a good start
While the acceptance by the United Arab Emirates of diplomatic relations with Israel is not the final deal hoped for by the U.S. and President Trump, it is a welcome beginning ("Telephone calls between UAE, Israel ring for the first time," Web, Aug. 16). Although many may believe that the driving force behind the UAE's refusal thus far to engage with Israel has been fear of an aggressive, terrorist-supporting Iran, a telling reason could be final disillusionment with the Palestinian Authority. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Decriminalization no solution
I noted Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney's recent comment about urging state lawmakers to legalize marijuana because marijuana-related arrests are disproportionately of Black people. Published August 17, 2020
EDITORIAL: Professional sports that disrespect America are a turn-off
If champions wear radical emblems on their sleeves and take a knee in disrespect for the stars and stripes, then patriotic Americans have but one choice: Turn. Them. Off. Published August 16, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Use Israeli spray on ‘protesters’
The Seattle terrorists used high-intensity lasers to damage the eyesight of federal officers. In other situations, bricks, rocks and frozen water bottles have severely injured police officers. So much for peaceful protest. The old tried-and-true riot control tools of batons, tear gas and rubber bullets appear to be ineffectual against brigands hell-bent on chaos, violence and looting. The answer: Israeli skunk spray. Published August 16, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: To left, only some racism is wrong
Recently, one of our Democratic representatives was on TV speaking out against some racism in southern Maryland. And rightly so. My complaint with the representative is they are not also appearing on TV to make sure people know that the racism of Black Lives Matter is just as wrong ("Embers of racism, with Obama's help, turned into an inferno," Web, Juy 25). Published August 16, 2020
EDITORIAL: Why aren’t the media demanding more interviews, press conferences from Joe Biden?
We all know the real reason Mr. Biden is being urged to remain in his bunker until Nov. 3. Published August 13, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: U.S. ‘disaster’ status overstated
"Virus surge makes U.S. weak link in global rebound" (Web, Aug. 11) conrains several "myths" regarding the U.S. response to the virus surge. The major error is in not realizing that the massive testing program in this country, combined with the contract tracing (both of which are good from a public-health standpoint) are bad from a public-relations standpoint. Published August 13, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: No outrage over murder of child
I was sickened by the news of the death of 5-year-old Cannon Hinnant, who was executed in cold blood with a rifle shot directly against his head by a career felon who lived next door to him in Wilson, North Carolina ("5-year-old shot to death in North Carolina; suspect sought," Web, Aug. 10). This was clearly another racist attack against a white child, unable to protect themselves. It makes the George Floyd tragedy pale by comparison. Where is the media coverage? Absent, of course, because this boy's death does not further the "narrative" that systemic racism is a one-way street. This is disgusting and there should be a national outrage. Death sentences should be applied when appropriate and carried out on the courthouse steps immediately following the trial. If that were done, crimes like this would be nonexistent. Published August 13, 2020
EDITORIAL: The November election is not about Joe Biden
If Joe Biden is elected president, he will, on Inauguration Day, be the oldest person -- at 78 -- to make it to the White House. Published August 12, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Vote for Biden is vote for Clintons
It is now perfectly clear that Joe Biden and the Clinton-staffed Sen. Kamala Harris camp will make the perfect Democratic ticket. Together they would pardon deep-state kingpins Bill and Hillary Clinton next year, and allow the Clintons' "Foundation" to use the White House as their backroom fundraising office and self-pardoning parlor going forward. Published August 12, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: President Harris, anyone?
An alarming thought occurred to me when I heard that Sen. Kamala Harris was Joe Biden's pick for vice president. Various polls have shown that people don't believe Mr. Biden will make it through his first term. Perhaps this means the Democrats and Mr. Biden came up with a new game plan to get a far-left cretin like Ms. Harris to take over the presidency. If Mr. Biden suddenly resigns due to health problems, we get President Harris. Published August 12, 2020
EDITORIAL: Efforts to close the wage gap are working
As the nation weathers a summer of social turmoil, a tool for erasing the economic component of racial disparity is already making a difference. The growing practice of refraining from using salary history in hiring decisions is helping to close the wage gap. Published August 11, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Extend aid money into next year
No matter what amount the political parties decide on when it comes to extending unemployment aid, the funds must be extended into January 2021. Published August 11, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: We are not free to harm others
Some people are empathetic in name only. They can talk the talk, but when it comes to walking the walk, they trip all over themselves. Published August 11, 2020
EDITORIAL: The rogue prosecution of Michael Flynn should unravel on appeal
The former Trump national security adviser on Tuesday faces the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, seeking dismissal of a criminal charge that has hounded him for more than three years. Published August 10, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Don’t let radicals take over
I am a naturalized citizen, having come to this country in 1951. I love the United States of America and revere its national anthem and its flag. I believe that all people should be treated equally and that all lives matter. However, I cannot understand how anyone who has bothered to look up the origin and beliefs of the Black Lives Matter organization can support it. Published August 10, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Truth can’t be torn down
Truth is not determined by a majority vote, the feelings of ignorant people, the media, angry mobs, cloistered professors, weak and corrupt politicians, the rich and powerful, or military victory. God determines -- and is -- truth. And following God, former Vice President John C. Calhoun taught that liberty is how God rewards goodness and intelligence. Published August 10, 2020
EDITORIAL: The November election with be the most important in decades
It's time, friends, to have "that" talk. The one about "The Stakes." Published August 9, 2020
