LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Keep investigating election
If the 2020 presidential election isn't investigated from the top down (with interest from the bottom up), there's no reason to go any further. There will never be a reason to vote again. This may be the intended result of the recurring avoidance of law, accountability, transparency and prosecution. What's it going to be? Are we still a nation? Who is running it? Published December 30, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Jesus was Jewish, period
Sen. Kelly Loeffler was too politically correct in her accusation that Raphael Warnock is anti-Israel ("Democrats on defense over backing by BLM," Page I, Dec. 29). Mr. Warnock's BLM association puts more focus on his bias. Published December 29, 2020
EDITORIAL: Events in Nashville are a reminder that terrorism hasn’t gone away
This past week, during the early hours on Christmas morning, an RV packed with explosives detonated in downtown Nashville. It was, we have since learned, a suicide bombing by a man named Anthony Quinn Warner. Not much else is known at this time. Published December 29, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Biden cheated — and got presidency
Lori Loughlin cheated to get her daughters into college — and was caught ("Lori Loughlin released after prison term in college scam," Web, Dec. 28). She got two months in jail, 100 hours of community service and a $150,000 fine. Joe Biden cheated in the election and got caught. He will soon become president. Published December 29, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Retired military not above law
Gen. George Washington was well aware of European history, and he was determined that we would not make the same mistakes Europe made. Therefore, one of his first tasks was to include in the 1775 military laws an offense if a military person made "disrespectful comments" concerning any military or government official. If this happened, they would be tried by court martial. That law, in some form, has remained in our congressional laws ever since, including in the major rewrite that took place in 1950. More than 155 individuals have been tried by court martial over those years. Published December 29, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Outrageous ‘relief’ bill
Only a pig farmer could have agreed with President Trump signing into law $1.4 trillion to fund the federal government and $892 billion more for a second COVID-19 relief package. Published December 28, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Election lacked clear standards
When it comes to the 2020 presidential election, it's not about the votes counted. It's about the process in which the votes were counted. Published December 28, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Why is pork allowed?
I just don't get it. There are so many questions and so few answers at a time when the nation is in great distress. The national debt is over $27 trillion. The national budget includes nearly $400 billion a year in national-debt interest. Yet these figures are never part of the discussion when it comes to legislation. Instead we see Congress passing legislation to increase this burden ("Trump signs coronavirus relief bill after days of tension," Web, Dec. 27). Published December 28, 2020
EDITORIAL: Biden’s switch from gas-powered cars to electric will cost consumers
The holidays traditionally place a strain on the budgets of many Americans, and the sporadic COVID-19 lockdowns throughout 2020 have only added to the struggle to make ends meet. As if those financial challenges were not enough, Joe Biden has more in store. Change is hard, to coin a phrase, and the kind of "clean energy revolution" he has in mind is likely to cost a pretty penny. Published December 28, 2020
EDITORIAL: Big Tech speech control factored into Trump’s defeat
Speak one's mind is an abiding American tradition. It is becoming rarer, though, as censorship intensifies. Published December 27, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Courthouses don’t belong to judges
Judges love to think of themselves as uniquely endowed with the ability to reach ultimate truth. "Judge won't try black man in court room with white portraits" (Web, Dec. 22) reads like a college essay. It contains no empirical data, as though the writer's feelings were a proper substitute for evidence. Also, it raises this question: Why does the judge have the authority to decorate "his" courtroom? This is a public building. The judge just works there. Does he also have the right to hang pictures of his own choosing? Published December 27, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Left’s elites butt in line for vaccine
It's hard to believe President-elect Joe Biden and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would have the chutzpah to butt to the front of the vaccine line ahead of millions of far more deserving recipients. For their behavior and dishonesty regarding President Trump's efforts against the coronavirus, these two should have been last in line for the vaccination. Published December 27, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: For team’s sake, remove Snyder
Every Washington Football Team scandal over the past 20 years always ends up with team owner Dan Snyder as the victim. The accuser is always made out to be the villain. The pattern continues today. The current victim card has Mr. Snyder claiming a conspiracy out to get him ("LOVERRO: Rivera aside, the culture won't change until the ownership does," Web, Dec. 25). Published December 27, 2020
EDITORIAL: Trump right to criticize the 5,593-page COVID-19 relief boondoggle
The Kennedy Center ($40 million), gender programs in Pakistan ($25 million), military assistance for Egypt ($1.3 billion), stimulus checks for the family members of illegal immigrants ($1,800 each). Published December 23, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Only the insecure care about titles
Can anyone imagine Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, the brilliant pediatric neurosurgeon from the Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore, and so many other physicians in Congress making the big deal that "Dr." Jill Biden is making about her title being used ("Dr. who? Jill Biden's doctorate spurs political uproar over sexism, credentialism," Web, Dec. 16)? That's the difference. Published December 23, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: PA, not Israel, to blame for poverty
The hatred of Israel by The Washington Post and New York Times is remarkable. I believe it is only outpaced by their hatred of President Trump. By contrast, the dictatorships of North Korea, China, Russia, Cuba, Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe all get a pass. Published December 23, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Georgia voters, U.S. counting on you
Since 1776, the United States has done more to promote liberty and provide opportunity than any nation on Earth. Millions have come seeking the American dream — and millions have achieved it. Published December 23, 2020
EDITORIAL: ‘A (Washington) Christmas Carol’
We've all read — or watched — Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." The story has so permeated our discourse that characters like Scrooge and Tiny Tim are employed as similes for miserliness and poverty. We also tend to remember, and use as metaphor, the trio of ghosts that visit Scrooge, ultimately precipitating a change in his soul for the better. Published December 22, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: In favor of ending Electoral College
I am a supporter of democracy, so I think the Electoral College should be abolished. Electors get paid to vote for candidates; isn't it wrong to pay someone to vote? And isn't it wrong to require a voter to vote for someone for whom they don't want to vote? Most electors are required to vote for a certain candidate. What about "one person, one vote?" Electors get to vote twice for president. Published December 22, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Fauci lies to kids
On TV last weekend, I saw a news segment with Dr. Anthony Fauci. In response to a child's question about the safety of Santa Claus coming to homes amid the coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Fauci said that he had personally gone to the North Pole and vaccinated Santa against the virus.
