EDITORIAL: Taking a bite out of crime fighting
State Sen. Ken Cuccinelli told The Washington Times yesterday that Virginia's crime labs are still in danger of becoming backlogged. Mr. Cuccinelli was the driving force behind an Aug. 19 special session that took the first key steps to solving the problem, so his words carry weight when he says more work needs to be done. EDITORIAL: Obama jilts Poland and the Czech Republic
The United States is poised to dump a critical missile-defense agreement with two of its most dependable NATO allies. The Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza reported yesterday that the Obama administration is going to scrap the "third site" anti-missile system scheduled to be deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic. Missile interceptors in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic were scheduled to be deployed by 2013. Now the plan appears to have been shot down. Published August 28, 2009
EDITORIAL: The $10 trillion deficit disaster
"At what point do we run out of money?" President Obama was asked in May. "Well, we are out of money now," he replied. That was when he projected the deficit to be $7 trillion over the next 10 years. Now his administration admits the number likely will reach $9 trillion. We sure are out of money -- and the true deficit number probably is at least another $1 trillion bigger. EDITORIAL: Health care run by trial lawyers
Political power, rather than substance, is at the heart of the Democrats' proposed health care legislation. Admission of that power-politics reality was the most significant occurrence in a very odd town-hall meeting Tuesday night held by Virginia Democratic Rep. James P. Moran. It is now clearer than ever that plaintiffs' lawyers collectively are the political powerhouse running the health care show. Published August 27, 2009
EDITORIAL: Bonuses for congressional staff
In debates all year long and in legislation passed just before the August recess, Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives have made one thing clear -- companies taking federal bailout money and other emergency aid shouldn't be doling out executive bonuses. Their point is that failure shouldn't be rewarded, especially on the taxpayer dime. That's a principle Speaker Nancy Pelosi should take to heart in running her own House. Published August 27, 2009
EDITORIAL: The government ‘Death Book’
The Obama administration claims that a health care takeover by government won't restrict access to care. Everybody will get more care for less money, the president has said. Of course, something has to give. One likely target for rationing will be care in the later stages of life. Bureaucratic disregard for the value of all life is insinuated in a government manual known as "the Death Book." Published August 26, 2009
EDITORIAL: Read the health care bill, congressman
If you are a member of Congress and you won't personally read the most important bill of the year and won't give the public time to read it either, you do not deserve to be in office. Published August 26, 2009
EDITORIAL: Obama vs. the CIA
The Obama administration's war on the CIA continued in force this week. The result may be prosecution of CIA interrogators who work to uncover threats to national security. This witch hunt does not make America safer. Published August 26, 2009
EDITORIAL: Encouraging terrorists
What was billed as an act of compassion is spiraling into a major political headache. British officials are facing hard questions on the circumstances of the release of terminally ill convicted Pan Am Flight 103 bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi. Questions are swirling over how the decision was made, by whom and why. The world and the victims' families deserve answers. Published August 25, 2009
EDITORIAL: Bury the messenger
If you can't muzzle the whistleblower, try to marginalize him. That seems to be the strategy of the Obama administration, which is showing that its commitment to liberal ideology trumps its pledge to foster open government. Published August 25, 2009
EDITORIAL: Taxes paying for politics
White House political operatives have been caught with their hands in the cookie jar. Specifically, the Obama administration is using taxpayer funds for a political campaign to push government health care. There are clear lines that define appropriate behavior in politics. This is over the line. Published August 25, 2009
EDITORIAL: Your taxes to pay for abortions
President Obama isn't being straight when he says current health care proposals don't provide government funding for abortion. They do. If Democratic plans are passed, your taxes will pay for abortions. Published August 24, 2009
EDITORIAL: Government thuggishness
Government coercion is becoming standard operating procedure in the nation's capital. Published August 24, 2009
EDITORIAL: Afghanistan is worth the fight
America must keep up the fight in Afghanistan despite the polls. Published August 24, 2009

It's a good time to be a polar bear. Published August 23, 2009
EDITORIAL: Attorneys should pony up
Plaintiffs' attorneys better watch out. When Bob Beckel, uber-Democrat and manager of Walter Mondale's 1984 presidential campaign, agrees on something with outspoken conservative Sarah Palin, last year's Republican nominee for vice president, it's time to take notice. That's especially true when they agree on a major stumbling block to health care reform, the single biggest issue in American politics today. Published August 23, 2009
EDITORIAL: Inspectors need independence
Democratic leaders in Congress want to give President Obama the ability to appoint inspectors general at five financial regulatory agencies. Such a move would undermine independent oversight of large parts of the federal bureaucracy. Published August 23, 2009
EDITORIAL: Sugar high
Americans love sugar so much that we protect the domestic industry by limiting sugar imports. This works like a jawbreaker in the U.S. economy. Published August 21, 2009
EDITORIAL: The last temptation of Rep. Massa
Democratic contempt for public concerns over government health care is getting brazen. Published August 21, 2009
EDITORIAL: Cap and degrade
With national attention focused on President Obama's troubled health care reform efforts, we can't afford to take our eyes off his other flawed and costly priority -- "cap and trade" global-warming legislation. Published August 21, 2009
