EDITORIAL: Rigged ‘science’
A fractured Supreme Court on Monday largely upheld the Environmental Protection Agency's radical rule designed to shut down the power plants that produce the most affordable electricity. The justices continue to accept the EPA's labeling of carbon dioxide as a "pollutant." This harmless gas, the agency insists, is melting the planet. Published June 23, 2014
EDITORIAL: Off the rails at Amtrak
Amtrak's latest budget submission asks Congress for $1.6 billion this year, and the government-owned passenger rail service continues to lose a lot of money. That's bad news for taxpayers, not so bad for Amtrak employees. Published June 23, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: War veterans betrayed at home
Now the veterans of the Iraq war, and soon the veterans of the war in Afghanistan, will share in common with the veterans of Vietnam War the bitter irony that we won every battle but ultimately lost the war — because we were defeated at home by self-serving, dishonorable politicians. The only consolation now is that far fewer of this generation will have died in vain. Published June 23, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: New ‘Marshall Plan’ could solve border crisis
The events in Iraq demonstrate that democracy is on the run in the Middle East. We are learning that without a desire to make the requisite sacrifices, the Bush doctrine of exporting democracy to that region appears to be failing. Meanwhile here at home, President Obama is taking a very different approach with democracy by throwing out the welcome mat to anyone wanting to experience it in America. Published June 23, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Pavlovian poetry
The curricula at too many of our public schools represent political correctness at play in the minds of captive students ("The politics of poetry," Web, June 18). Often it appears that progressive educators have formed an alliance with Ivan Pavlov's conditioned reflex, the idea being to turn out young versions of the politically correct mindset. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Liberal media still complicit in cover-ups
President Obama's failed policies have been costly to our economy, they have increased the number of those in poverty and needing food stamps, and they've resulted in fewer full-time jobs, a weakened and stressed military, a health care system that limits access and services for patients (including veterans), too few physicians to provide care, further Middle East turmoil and a world threat by emboldened Islamist terrorists. EDITORIAL: Obama’s family concerns
The White House on Monday will entertain a summit on working families. This is not as positive as it sounds. President Obama is not out to help Mom and Pop find ways to make frazzled ends meet while taking care of their first newborn child. The president's attention is devoted to a new kind of family. EDITORIAL: Hypocrisy down on the farm
The Senate on Thursday delayed the vote on a $180 billion "minibus" spending package that includes a few billion for the Agriculture Department and related agencies. This will complement the separate $100 billion-a-year farm bill enacted earlier in the year. These agricultural handouts are once more igniting fierce trade disputes with India and China. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Amend Senate immigration bill now
President Obama's reported telephone call to President Enrique Pena Nieto of Mexico, welcoming Mr. Nieto's efforts to target the criminals transporting young children across the Mexican border to the United States, is totally self-serving and in direct contrast to the Senate immigration bill he supports ("Obama talks tough to Mexico: Illegal-immigrant children won't get to stay," Web, June 19). LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Both parties stuck in political past
I got nostalgic about the Vietnam War a while back and ordered everything Netflix had to offer on the subject. I thought maybe I would catch a glimpse of Long Binh, where I was stationed for 11 months during the period from 1971 to 1972. The first thing that popped up was President Lyndon Johnson pounding the podium to espouse the "domino theory." Between the Great Society and the domino theory, how many lives have been ruined or extinguished, and how much wealth has been squandered? Published June 20, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Trademark cancellation Orwellian
Legally, as we are supposedly a society of laws, the Redskins trademark is and remains private property ("Redskins trademark canceled by U.S. Patent and Trademark Office," Web, June 18). Historically in existence since 1933, the name is intended to be an honor representing bravery and the indomitable spirit named after Lone Star Dietz, an American Indian coach of the football team. EDITORIAL: Strange priorities at the VA
The administrators at the Veterans Administration have apparently been busy while old soldiers waited to see a doctor, after all. Serving those who served is not necessarily a priority, but saving the planet is Job 1. Solar panels and windmills can be more important than the touch of a healing hand. Published June 19, 2014
EDITORIAL: The courage to share
Tesla Motors embodies the best and the smartest of business. The Silicon Valley-based automaker produces electric cars with price tags that reach into the six figures. They're beloved of Hollywood celebrities who get a bargain in a status symbol, thanks to the generosity of taxpayers who have poured nearly a billion dollars into the company through loans, environmental credits and subsidies. EDITORIAL: Opportunity for Kevin McCarthy
House Republicans gathered in the bowels of the Capitol on Thursday to select a new majority leader. Many hoped and the naive expected that the stunning defeat of Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia would bring in bold new leadership. But this changing of the old guard is not likely to make a dime's worth of difference. Published June 19, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Agree to disagree
Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once made a statement that perfectly sums up the toxic attitude of homosexuals toward critics of same-sex 'marriage.' Churchill said, "Some people's idea of freedom of speech is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone says anything back, that is an outrage." The homosexual outrage is to label same-sex 'marriage' critics homophobes or bigots. Published June 19, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Border situation is child abuse
A stampede of tens of thousands of unaccompanied alien children are crossing over the southern U.S border ("Life inside a children's warehouse: Border agents watch over illegals in limbo," Web, June 18). President Obama's flagrant disregard for America's immigration laws has become an open invitation to illegally cross our borders. Published June 19, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Time to change Oklahoma’s name, too?
I guess if the name "Redskins" is offensive (even though the Supreme Court said years ago it was not), then surely it is also offensive to name an entire state "red people" ("Redskins trademark canceled by U.S. Patent and Trademark Office," Web, June 18). Oklahoma means "red people" in Choctaw. But that is probably the next thing on the list for the politically correct (and factually incorrect) crowd. Published June 19, 2014
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: ‘Taker’ class shouldn’t have say
Following the recent defeat of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Virginia Republican, comedian Bill Maher said of the GOP: "So this is an entirely Christian, white party ... " That is outstandingly disingenuous. Although Mr. Maher's implication is exactly opposite, what this actually means is that the Republican voters, certainly of many ethnicities and religions, are voting for candidates based on merits other than personal biases. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Crashed-server claim fails smell test
The Internal Revenue Service is informing Congress that the computer hard drives of seven employees all crashed during the critical period leading up to the breaking of the conservative-group-targeting scandal ("GOP: IRS lost emails go beyond Lerner," Web, June 17). In this claimed crash, decisive emails were supposedly lost from the server where they were stored and forensic techniques for recovering data from all hard drives were said to have failed. EDITORIAL: The VA spending ‘cure’
Congress says it's going to "fix" the Veterans Administration. That means it's time to hold on to your wallet. Published June 18, 2014
