LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Consider Asia-Pacific commission

With a divided government in Washington and increased challenges in Asia-Pacific and other parts of the world, the Obama administration's ambitious trade deal with Asia could face headwinds for the next two years ("Asia trade deal coming together quickly, Froman says," Web, Jan. 27). The Senate Finance Committee leadership must not ignore the impact regional economic integration may have had on Asia-Pacific economic security. Published February 3, 2015

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Democrats presided over racist policy

I am inclined to think that Black History Month should be cut back to two weeks since only half the history is being told. So far those calling for a "dialogue" on race seem to prefer a monologue based on a false narrative. Published February 3, 2015

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: End prison perks for ‘fake’ Muslims

President Obama and his administration seem quick to assert that the multitude of terrorist acts perpetrated in recent history are done by individuals who do not represent the religion of Islam. This is their justification for not identifying these enemies of freedom as Islamic radicals or Islamic terrorists. Published February 2, 2015

EDITORIAL: Passion for climate change cools

Climate change is becoming a hard sell. When the computer models get the next day's forecast wrong, it's hard to persuade anyone to pay attention to their predictions of what the Earth's climate will be a half-century from now. Saving the world from imaginative calamity and catastrophe is never easy, and President Obama came away from a global-warming sales pitch in India with an echo of what salesmen dread to hear, a slammed door. EDITORIAL: CPSC eyes useless regulations

Americans ought to live forever, with thousands of federal bureaucrats hard at work protecting the health and safety of all God's creatures. The various federal agencies have more than 3,000 rules and regulations now pending, most of them aimed at harassment and health, and the lights stay on late in the imaginations of the folks at the Environmental Protecting Agency, in particular, and at the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), where no doofus idea goes unconsidered. EDITORIAL: Democrats dig themselves deeper in hole

Will Rogers, the political humorist from the previous century whose humor derived from actual wit, once observed that he belonged to no organized political party: "I'm a Democrat." Another of his witticisms is good advice for what's left of the political party he was so proud to be a part of: "If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging." Published February 1, 2015

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Loretta Lynch wrong on illegal immigrants ‘right’ to work

Attorney General nominee Loretta Lynch stated in her confirmation hearing this week that she believes the "right to work is shared by everyone in this country regardless of how they came here" ("Attorney General nominee Loretta Lynch defends Obama immigration policies," Web, Jan. 28). Ponder that for a moment. It's quite remarkable, probably even to those who, like me, are for reasonable and bipartisan immigration reform. Published February 1, 2015

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Obama ignores urgent global threat

The president, the "lame-stream" media and liberals display their total lack of historical knowledge and wisdom through their obsession with deflated footballs, GloZell Green and even the "dire threat" of global warming — all while they deny the greatest threat to future generations: global terrorism. EDITORIAL: Hillary Clinton’s war in Libya

War is a terrible thing, as everyone who has ever been in one can testify, but war can tempt a president, and sometimes merely someone with the itch to be a president, as a way to burnish a warrior credential. Published January 29, 2015

EDITORIAL: Reforming regulators is key to economic growth

Taxes take a bite out of the economy, but regulations take a bigger one. Congress has surrendered much of its lawmaking authority to the president and a growing swarm of unelected bureaucrats, and regulations are growing faster than ever. The Obama administration thinks this is the way to run an economy. It's actually the way to cripple it. Published January 29, 2015

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Impose State of the Union rules now

Two recent op-eds about the president's State of the Union speech ("The president's fictional record," Web, Jan. 26 and "When politics defies reality," Web, Jan. 27) highlight the need for a revised State of the Union format. Structure needs to be imposed on these speeches before they descend further into balloon releases. Published January 29, 2015

Azerbaijan: America’s new ambassador to Azerbaijan: Robert F. Cekuta

Shortly before leaving for holiday recess, the U.S. Senate approved the nomination of Robert F. Cekuta, a career foreign service diplomat with expertise in international energy issues, to be the new American ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan. Published January 28, 2015

Azerbaijan: Tovuz, the land of antiquity and natural beauty

The region draws its name from two of the ancient Turkish tribes that settled there: the Tovuz and the Ovuz. Its buildings and monuments preserve some of the region's rich culture and history, dating to medieval times. Published January 28, 2015
