Iranian dissidents call for regime change

Tens of thousands of supporters of a dissident Iranian opposition group filled a vast convention hall here over the weekend to call for the downfall of Iran's theocratic government. Published July 13, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: In Ukraine, corruption on rise

James A. Lyons' "A 'culture of impunity'" (Web, 10 July) made me remember the American playwright Arthur Miller, who two days after his wedding reportedly found out that his new wife, Marilyn Monroe, was a drug user. Perhaps because of Monroe's immersion in the Hollywood culture of addiction impunity, Joe DiMaggio divorced her. Now, two years after Ukraine's pro-E.U. Maidan revolution, something similar is happening to the West. Published July 12, 2016

Iran’s nuclear deception

Anniversaries are usually celebrations of happy times, but not every milestone is worth celebrating. Thursday marks one year since Iran sealed its nuclear deal with the P5+1 world powers, and evidence is emerging that the Islamic republic is still working on its weapons of mass destruction. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Politicians itching for a fight

If I didn't know any better, I'd think major U.S. power players were itching to set Americans against each other. The actions I was brought up to believe were racist are today heralded by the president of our country as some kind of heroic theater. Two successive top attorneys have turned their backs on blatant illegal and racist activity while Americans have looked on in utter disbelief. Published July 12, 2016

President Obama’s lecture in Dallas

President Obama flew to Dallas Tuesday to heal broken hearts, and did what he does best — break hearts into smaller pieces. He used the occasion of a memorial service, with the broken families and heartsick friends of the five slain Dallas police officers sitting before him, to offer only his lecture to white folks to repent of their sins. Obama’s legacy of race

Americans elected their first black president eight years ago with Great Expectations, the greatest among them that that the election of a president with a brown face would improve race relations. In fact, it was this "hope" that was the most attractive qualification of Barack Obama. But hope, as he has demonstrated, is not a strategy. Published July 11, 2016

Clinton’s sacrificing the innocent (maybe)

Caesar's wife was just born too soon. She paid the price of someone else's hanky-panky, actually someone else's attempted hanky-panky. Had she been born a millennium or two later she would have fit right in to a time and place where everything goes. Published July 11, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Miracles happen with our help

Opinion polls proclaim that a majority of Americans are distraught and disturbed about our nation's presumptive political leaders. Many also deeply despair the natural disasters, here in West Virginia and elsewhere. They mourn the divisive rhetoric and hate-filled violence that stalks the well-being of our families and our nation. Published July 11, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Press, supporters complicit

Many in the mainstream press have bent over backward to portray the "Black Lives Matter" movement in the most positive light possible -- despite the fact that they have chanted in unison "Pigs in a blanket; fry them like bacon," and "What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want them? Now!" Published July 11, 2016

The lesson of Dallas

Some events speak with such loud clarity that no one, neither president nor preacher nor poet, can say anything to add to what everyone feels. President Obama, more eloquent than most, quickly exhausted adjectives speaking from Europe in the wake of the police massacre in Dallas. "Vicious, calculated, despicable and horrible" failed to adequately describe it. Published July 10, 2016

James Comey’s newspeak around Hillary Clinton’s email scandal

George Orwell recognized the seductive drift into a totalitarian society more than six decades ago. He predicted such a society would arrive with a new language he called "Newspeak." This would disguise truth with subtle elisions from word to word, concept to concept, in a simplistic fashion that would be easily propagated. The new language was to become the lingua franca by the year 1950, leading to a new tyranny that would descend by the year 1984. Published July 10, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Settle gun debate now

One of the arguments the National Rifle Association and Donald Trump keep raising against stricter gun control laws is this: If people in crowds had been allowed to carry weapons, the death toll in mass shootings (such as those in Paris, Orlando and now Dallas) would have been dramatically lower. Published July 10, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Donald Trump would improve Supreme Court

Think about it: A vote for Hillary Clinton means a lifetime for the next socialist Supreme Court justices she appoints, and possibly four to eight years of Hillary, followed most likely by a President Elizabeth Warren. Published July 10, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Say no to Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton should have her security clearance revoked. Her reckless negligence and poor judgment while secretary of state has endangered America's national security. Published July 7, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Hillary Clinton incapabale of governance

The FBI's recommendation of no criminal indictment of Hillary Clinton in "Servergate," accompanied by its scathing indictment of Mrs. Clinton's professional leadership skills in the matter, backlights a very underreported aspect of the presidential campaign: Mrs. Clinton is flat-out incompetent. Tragedy in Baton Rouge

Ferguson. Baltimore. Minneapolis. Baton Rouge. What these cities, separated by thousands of miles of the American landscape, have in common is that they have become shorthand for police brutality, persuading many Americans that the nation's police are out of control. Published July 7, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: CPUSA endorsement telling

The Communist Party (CPUSA) has been broadcasting its support for the Democratic Party and candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. However, for some reason, our media have failed to take notice. The liberal media writes about Donald Trump and support from white nationalists. So what gives? Published July 7, 2016

Obama’s Keystone contradiction

President Obama is all about free trade. He waxes eloquent about the rewards in the global marketplace and warns against protectionist notions that have sometimes dominated the 2016 presidential campaign. Published July 7, 2016
