LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Trump a tax genius?
After releasing her tax returns and saying that she and her husband had paid a 30-percent tax rate, Hillary Clinton tweeted, "Here's a pretty incredible fact: There is a nonzero chance that Donald Trump isn't paying *any* taxes." Published August 15, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Marine’s discharge an outrage
It is fortunate that the Marine Corps was able to recognize Cpl. Monifa Sterling's workstation placards for what they actually were: a threat to discipline and good order ("Military court upholds Marine's bad conduct discharge over Bible verses," Web, Aug. 11). Cpl. Sterling could not be permitted to express her faith in such a blatant manner, and was apparently deemed unworthy of a modicum of common decency and consideration on the part of her supervisor. EDITORIAL: ISIS comes closer
The adage "the best defense is a good offense" is an old one and usually an accurate one. It's frequently invoked by sportswriters on the football beat, but it can apply to warfare, too. President Obama, a keen sports fan, nevertheless failed to understand this and now America's enemies are coming. Whether they can be stopped before they inflict further serious damage is a question we'll all see answered. Published August 15, 2016
EDITORIAL: Bringing back ‘stolen’ jobs
The international economy is so interlocked that creating jobs in one national economy creates jobs in another national economy. That's why it's misleading to talk of the Chinese and other low-wage countries having "stolen" American jobs. It's not "just that simple." Published August 15, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Trump dangerous for America
There is an urgency facing this nation: Donald Trump is the Republican presidential nominee, but certain Republican leaders have failed to step up to the plate and address Mr. Trump and his followers. Republican leaders such as Sen. John McCain and House Speaker Paul Ryan are putting their love of power before country. And it's a shame, considering that they both clearly love America. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Better of two choices
American citizens should vote for Donald Trump. It's pretty clear that the Republican establishment is going all out against him. They're throwing the kitchen sink — and anything else they can grab — at him. They're attacking him, discrediting him and accusing him of all sorts of malfeasance. They're deliberately trying to turn the public against him. Published August 14, 2016
EDITORIAL: Extermination in Aleppo
An epic battle continues for control of Syria's largest city, once a rival of Cairo and Istanbul as a center of urban culture and civilization in the Middle East. Aleppo, once the Western terminus of the Silk Road from China, is swiftly becoming the latest symbol of man's inhumanity to man. Published August 14, 2016
EDITORIAL: Nannies gone wild
"Multi-tasking" is the current fad word for "trying to do two things at once." Some folks are against it. New Jersey, which doesn't think Jersey guys are smart enough to pump gasoline into their own cars, now wants to make a misdemeanor of drinking coffee while driving. Published August 14, 2016
Climate change seen as hoax by growing numbers
First there was Brexit, when Great Britain shook up the global establishment by following through on a dare to exit the European Union. Now a movement is building that would further stun the supranationalists: an exit from the United Nations climate change protocol, dubbed "Clexit." (Not very imaginative, but sloganeers are rarely original.) Published August 11, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Who’s unfit for leadership?
So 50 Republican officials think Donald Trump is not fit to be president. I didn't see a letter from them regarding Hillary Clinton's and Barack Obama's fitness, so I presume these lofty, high-minded civil servants believe both of those folks are just fine. Published August 11, 2016
Hillary Clinton’s stale economics
It's too bad that Ronald Reagan is not around today to say, "Well, there she goes again." Hillary Clinton's much-anticipated economic policy speech was full of fluffy rhetoric, stale proposals for rebuilding the middle class that Barack Obama peddled eight years ago. Those were the ideas that tanked the middle class. Published August 11, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Government out of whack
The wheels of our three branches of government are enormously out of balance. The judicial branch decides that health insurance premiums are taxes, the executive branch legislates via executive order, the legislative branch writes laws, and government agencies take charge. Published August 11, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Donald Trump a better choice for Israel
Two proudly Jewish conservative pundits, Charles Krauthammer and Mark Levin, as well as other Jewish #NeverTrump movement members, seem to be doing their best to dampen enthusiasm about and dissuade millions of conservatives from actively supporting Donald Trump. Published August 10, 2016
Hillary Clinton and the Second Amendment
Another day, another Donald Trumpism to exploit and enjoy. What the Republican candidate actually said about Hillary Clinton and the Second Amendment was quickly lost in the Democratic hysteria that always follows any hint of g-u-n-s. (We can't even say the word.) Published August 10, 2016
The coming age of the chimera
Flights of fantasy have long envisioned animals with human traits. George Lucas' "Star Wars" entertained millions of movie fans with an iconic tavern scene where all manner of beastly aliens packed a drinking dive and behaved in a way that any visitor to a biker bar would recognize. Beasts behaving badly. Published August 10, 2016
William Bratton tough act to follow as New York City police commissioner
A policeman's lot, as Gilbert and Sullivan reminded us, is not a happy one, and the lot of New York City may not be a happy one, either, in the wake of the departure of William Bratton as the police commissioner. Published August 9, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Stand up to Vladimir Putin
Russia's full-scale war on NATO's eastern front is of major relevance to America and both its major political parties. Russia has killed more than 8,000 Ukrainians, seized Crimea, Donbas, part of Georgia and more. The mainstream media and some Americans are ignoring Vladimir Putin's war on NATO's eastern front, and this is hard to excuse. Published August 9, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Harvey Milk undeserving of ship honor
Whenever I wonder what else can the Obama administration do to shock the senses, it does not fail me. As I read in Monday's Washington Times, a new low has been reached: A Navy ship is being named for polarizing gay-rights icon Harvey Milk ("Ray Mabus bypasses war heroes, names Navy ship for gay rights icon Harvey Milk," Web, Aug. 7). Published August 9, 2016
Hillary Clinton ridicules Donald Trump’s economic plan
For one brief moment this week it looked possible, if not exactly probable, that the presidential campaign of 2016 might focus on real issues of actual concern to Americans, after all. Donald Trump delivered a speech outlining an economic plan he says would get the millions of Americans left behind in recent years back to work, lighten the tax burden on the middle class with Reagan-like tax cuts and double the annual GDP growth rate. Published August 9, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Don’t emulate past in all things
Hillary Clinton and House Speaker Paul Ryan keep reminding us that America was founded by immigrants, but they seem to have forgotten to mention that America was also founded on slavery. We are living in a hostile, overpopulated world, and what worked in the 1800s is not relevant in 2016. Published August 8, 2016
