Obama campaigning for Hillary Clinton at the United Nations
President Obama deserves credit for consistency. At home or abroad, he never misses an opportunity to cite failings and weaknesses of the country that twice elected him president. He was at it again Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly, where envy of the West is never sated. Published September 20, 2016
A good guy with a gun stops Islamic terrorist
Dahir Ahmed Adan is the Somali terrorist who wandered through the Crossroads Mall in St. Cloud, Minn., with a sharp knife, taking a religious census. He demanded of shoppers whether they were "Christians or Muslims," and put his knife to the Christians. Published September 20, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Government often problem, not solution
Many members of the mainstream press have been conditioned to believe that if someone hurts or if there is a problem in society, government must act. Not the private sector; not individual Americans; and not churches or non-profits, but government. Published September 19, 2016
In Missouri, guns and hysteria
Nobody does hysteria better than The New York Times, and over the years the editorial page of the old gray lady has fulminated most over the Second Amendment. The very idea of guns frightens the old gray lady beyond her feminist endurance. Published September 19, 2016
Terror in the streets, again
Reality is rarely kind to the purveyors of fantasies. Barack Obama and his administration have tried for eight years to persuade everyone that Islamic terror is merely a figment of the imaginations of bigots, racists and other bad people. But he can't seem to get the memo to the radical Islamic terrorists, who keep trying to blow up Jews, Christians and other infidels, and often succeed. Published September 19, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Don’t vote with emotions
Defying virtually all the pundits' predictions, Donald Trump has defeated 16 of his opponents. Just a few weeks ago these same pundits resurrected their strongly felt predictions that Mr. Trump was "finished." After being 0 for 16, a person would be rethinking his or her position, right? Wrong. Published September 19, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Donald Trump in worse shape than Hillary Clinton
Hillary Clinton has had some physical health issues after several years of grueling government service, personal and political attacks and presidential campaigning. Published September 18, 2016
Democrats dash to the left an opportunity for Donald Trump
To hear the big media tell it, the Republicans are angry, split and spoiling for a fight with each other. This is not altogether bad. Democrats and cats have fought for years and the result is more cats and more Democrats. Maybe it will work for Republicans. Published September 18, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Gary Johnson right choice for president
The Libertarian ticket of Gary Johnson and William Weld brings a huge amount of executive experience, acquired when the candidates were governors. I believe governors are the most qualified politicians to ascend to the presidency. Published September 18, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Science determines sex
The Michigan education board is set to approve guidelines declaring that students themselves are best qualified to determine their own gender identity, and that outside confirmation from medical and mental health professionals is not required ("Michigan board approves LGBT guidance to schools," Web, Sept. 14). Published September 18, 2016
Obama birther story won’t die
The false story of Barack Obama's birth is the story that just won't die. It's apparently too valuable to too many people to put it in the graveyard of myths, fables and convenient tall tales. Published September 18, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Boycott boycotters
In light of the recent dishonorable attacks on our national anthem by the pampered divas of professional sports, I would like to ask one question: Where is the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars? Published September 15, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Police need tools to do job
In my opinion, letting the police have the equipment they need to keep the population safe should be a good thing ("Donald Trump's vow to return military equipment to police jeopardizes outreach to blacks," Web, Sept. 12). If a person is not breaking the law, why would he or she need to fear the police having this equipment? Published September 15, 2016
EDITORIAL: Something there is that likes a wall
Something was lost in the coverage when President Enrique Pena Nieto entertained Donald Trump in Mexico last month. Most of the reporters expected the two men to greet each other with baseball bats and brass knuckles and instead they established a mutual civility that is, alas, missing between Hillary and the Donald. Not paying attention to what the two presidents were saying to each other, most of the reporters missed the most important thing to come out of the meeting. "Making Mexico's borders with our friends and neighbors in Central America more secure," said President Nieto, "is of vital importance for Mexico and the United States." Published September 15, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: More disregard for Americans
Hillary Clinton decided to expose other persons to her pneumonia, a potentially contagious disease. She demonstrated an inability to see the immorality of that decision, which could have life-threatening consequences for the young and elderly. Her statement, "I just didn't think it was going to be that big a deal," illustrates once again her contempt for the welfare of the American people. Deplorable. Published September 15, 2016
EDITORIAL: Welcome details of Trump economics
Donald Trump put some meat on the bones of his economic plan in New York on Thursday, and his plan to restore growth should mute some of his more ardent conservative critics. These critics have been playing "can you top this" with each other, vying to say the meanest things about him, and here's something positive for them to consider. Published September 15, 2016
Buying into religion
Religion in America is no longer the faith of our fathers. Belief is always an uphill climb and our forebears weren't the sort who sought out the gentle slopes. Moderns explain their change of heart as simply the natural progression from superstition to enlightenment. Published September 14, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: School choice means prosperity
In these final days of the 114th Congress (until Sept. 30, 2016, when Congress returns home to campaign for reelection), the most critical task that stands before us is to set our nation back onto the constitutional track by restoring "the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity." Published September 14, 2016
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Delusional Democrats
When we elected Barack Obama as our president, we selected not only a chief of the executive branch of government but a chief political philosopher as well. As philosopher-in-chief, Mr. Obama can divine the future, see the arc of history to which all the rest of us mortals are blind, and know just where America's most insidious enemies can be found -- in the Republican Party. Published September 14, 2016
The ultimate test of the moral man
The pessimists among us insist that all traces of moral behavior have disappeared from the nation's politics, that lying and stealing and soliciting bribes (sometimes called "contributions" if to a closely held family foundation) have become the reason that men and even women seek to become president of the United States.
