"You've got this crazy system where all of a sudden 25 million more people have health care and then the people are out there busting it, sometimes 60 hours a week, wind up with their premiums doubled and their coverage cut in half," Bill Clinton said. "It's the craziest thing in the world." (Associated Press)

Bill Clinton decries Obamacare as a failure

Hillary Clinton's surrogates in the big media continue to be obsessed with Donald Trump's wide-ranging discussions from what they think his message ought to be. They're missing a good sidebar. Bubba is back at what he does best, being Bubba. Published October 4, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Next president must stop Vladimir Putin

During the G-20 talks, Russia and China did joint anti-submarine and island-seizing exercises, as Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping fill the void in a time of American retreat around the globe, especially in Syria, Ukraine and NATO. After eight years of Mr. Putin taking America to the cleaners, the next U.S. president must make U.S. power great again. Published October 3, 2016

Donald Trump, taxes and what’s fair

Every small-business man and woman in America, every farmer, rancher, and investor knows that when you have a bad year with your business you get to offset future profits against your losses. This is pretty standard stuff. If the government didn't allow businesses to write off losses, there would be a lot less risk-taking, a lot fewer new businesses started, and a lot fewer American jobs. Hillary Clinton’s ‘implicit bias’

The world is changing at breakneck speed but that's not fast enough for someone who demands instant perfection. There was a time when the disappointments that come to everyone were resolved by consulting with the better angels of a human's nature, and getting on with making the best of it. Now the culture teaches to consult only to find better angles, and knock the devil out of whoever gets in the way. Published October 3, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Hillary Clinton dangerously flawed

Electing Hillary Clinton as the first woman president would be a great moment in the history of this great nation. Except she is a fatally flawed human being who is now known to be willing to put the defense and security of the United States in danger so that she would not be inconvenienced by having to use two email systems and servers. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Libertarians should toss Gary Johnson

Just when I thought about switching to the Libertarian Party, its 2016 presidential candidate, Gary Johnson, opened his mouth and Joe Biden fell out ("Aleppo 2.0: Gary Johnson can't name single foreign leader," web, Sept. 28). If the Libertarian Party has any hope of a future as a serious party, they need to disavow their association with him immediately. He has embarrassed himself, his running mate, his fledgling party, and anyone who may have been considering supporting it. Published October 2, 2016

Taking a big stick to liberals

Nobody understood the close association between language that intentionally misleads and ideology that deliberately oppresses like George Orwell, the early 20th-century Englishman who coined so much of our political vernacular, the very words Big Brother, newspeak, memory hole, thoughtcrime and doublethink. He even has a credible claim to giving the Cold War its name. Published October 2, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Government shut-down maneuver selfish, lazy

Here we go again with the perennial federal-government shutdown. Congress should have completed both committee and legislative action to fund the 12 cabinet-level departments and federal agencies, as well as the special programs, months ago, prior to its summer-long sojourn. But of course it didn't. Published October 2, 2016

Protecting the elections

We are often told that there is virtually no voter fraud in this country and that those who worry about stolen elections are really just racists intent upon "suppressing" the votes of poor and minority voters. States requiring any form of voter identification face court challenges, and very few people who are caught casting fraudulent votes are ever prosecuted. This is because there are so few of them and they have no impact on elections anyway. Published October 2, 2016

Alec Baldwin tries to take down Donald Trump

Washington, a perceptive wit once said, is Hollywood for ugly people. If that's so, the ugly people in the nation's capital think of Hollywood as Washington for dumb people with money for brains. The politicians on the left pander to the pretty people for access to their pockets as the place to dig for gold. Published September 29, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Mexico’s own ‘wall’ policy

"Something there is that likes a wall" (Web, Sept. 15) explored the perplexing fact that Mexico has far stricter immigration laws and border policies than the United States. How is this possible? Published September 29, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Nothing ‘democratic’ here

When the word "liberal" fell into such universal disrepute, the Democrats sent in "progressive" to pinch hit. Then they admitted a socialist as a contender for their anticipated national rule. Published September 29, 2016

Hillary Clinton rants at police, encourages mobs

Violent crime is ever more fashionable in the major cities of America and the police are losing control of the street. That's the clear message in the latest crime reports of the FBI. The compassionate liberals who want to handcuff the police, are eager to leave the streets to the rioters who have turned Charlotte into a war zone. Liberal apologists simply dismiss the clear evidence. Published September 28, 2016

Hillary Clinton fighting wars women have already won

We've come a long way, Miss Baby, since women went off to college in search of an Mrs. degree, and a good thing, too. Discrimination hurts everyone. Social institutions large and small have enacted policies in accord with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Hillary Clinton clear first-debate winner

In the first debate, Hillary Clinton smoked Donald Trump pure and simple, hands down. The contest featured a political player piano stuffed with soundbites, calm and collected, resplendent in red, against an easily distracted political neophyte clearly overmatched in every aspect. I was looking forward to a donnybrook worthy of the beer and chips I had laid in, but soon became almost as distracted as the man in blue. Published September 28, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Locking Taiwan out of ICAO unwise

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Take down HSBC

The UK-based HSBC is seeking to release billions of dollars of capital tied up in the United States without upsetting the country's politicians and regulators. Nevermind the politicians; after the crimes against humanity that this bank helps facilitate with drug cartels and terrorist organizations, I'm upset that it is still able to conduct business in the United States. Terror on the Chattanooga Choo-Choo

There's not much of elegance and quiet pleasure left in travel. "Getting there," in the famous Cunard slogan, is no longer half the fun. But what pleasure there is usually rides on steel rails. Too bad, but Congress in its wisdom may be about to fix that. Published September 27, 2016
