EDITORIAL: Biden: Back on the chain gang
Vice President Joe Biden told a racially mixed audience Wednesday that if Republicans take back the White House, "They're going to put y'all back in chains." It's hard to say what is more offensive: Mr. Biden's overt use of inflammatory racial symbolism, or someone from Delaware saying "y'all." Published August 14, 2012
EDITORIAL: Gibson axed up by Lacey Act
President Obama doesn't think Arizona has any business enforcing federal immigration law, yet his administration wants the federal government to make sure U.S. companies abide by obscure regulations adopted by foreign countries. Published August 14, 2012
EDITORIAL: Obama: Let’s take over every industry
First President Obama said "the private sector is doing fine." Then he lectured business owners, "you didn't build that." Now he wants to extend the government's auto-industry takeover across the board. Mr. Obama simply cannot understand how the economy can function without government's firm guiding hand. GHEI: The Social Security Ponzi scheme
As of last year, a married couple earning two average incomes would have paid more into Social Security that they could expect to receive from it. If the man lives to the expected age of 82 and the woman to 85, they would get back $556,000 of the $598,000 they paid into the system over their lives, according to the Urban Institute. That's a bad deal, and the ripoff will only get worse without major reform. Published August 10, 2012
EDITORIAL: Obama: Pay my wife, please
President Obama thinks his wife should be paid for the privilege of serving as first lady. Speaking at a campaign event in Denver on Wednesday, Mr. Obama invoked Mrs. Obama's plight to make a point about equal pay for equal work. Published August 9, 2012
EDITORIAL: Washington’s camera craze
The District of Columbia's speed-camera revenue-raising grows more brazen by the day. Last week, officials announced a dozen new speed-trap locations, while the for-profit Arizona-based vendor American Traffic Solutions (ATS) has been busy installing permanent speed cameras at well-concealed freeway locations on Interstate 295 and Interstate 395. EDITORIAL: Obamacare’s free lunch
America simply can't afford Obamacare. According to a new Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report, the new entitlement will grow an explosive 6 percent annually from 2017 to 2022, impose a slew of new taxes which will ripple through the economy, and will still leave 29 million people without health insurance. Published August 8, 2012
EDITORIAL: Obama’s uphill climb
Recent dueling headlines have been predicting an Obama landslide or a Romney steamroller in the November election. The polls show a tight race, but given the fundamentals of the economy, it shouldn't even be close. Published August 8, 2012
EDITORIAL: The Civil War of 2016
Imagine Tea Party extremists seizing control of a South Carolina town and the Army being sent in to crush the rebellion. This farcical vision is now part of the discussion in professional military circles. Published August 7, 2012
EDITORIAL: Monumental waste
Government waste is so prevalent that it rarely comes as a surprise. Bureaucrats partying at public expense, inefficient labor-union contracts and massive cost overruns are the natural consequence of giving civil servants the ability to spend money earned by others. Published August 7, 2012
EDITORIAL: The Solyndra standard
Power means never having to say you're sorry. Despite contrary evidence, the Obama administration is sticking to its story that the decision to loan $535 million to solar-panel manufacturer Solyndra was the right thing to do. Published August 6, 2012
EDITORIAL: Angry man Obama
The latest headline in the 2012 race is that President Obama hates Mitt Romney. The subtext of the story is that the president is in fact afraid of his challenger. Published August 6, 2012
EDITORIAL: Much ado about monetary policy
The economy continues to drag, and policymakers refuse to do what it takes to restore prosperity. The official unemployment number climbed to 8.3 percent, and the broadest measure of joblessness, known as the U6, increased to 15 percent for July. Economic growth is stalled at 1.5 percent. Published August 3, 2012
EDITORIAL: Obama frags military voters
President Obama goes out of his way to appear to support the troops. But when it comes to voting, he would like to keep them out of the fight. Published August 3, 2012
EDITORIAL: Tea Party Tuesday
The Tea Party hasn't dominated the headlines in quite some time. Following its ballot-box success in 2010, the loosely organized small-government movement has taken a breather. Results from Tuesday's primary elections in Texas and Georgia leave little doubt that the Tea Party is back and ready for action in November. Published August 2, 2012
EDITORIAL: Obama arming al Qaeda
Reuters reported Wednesday that President Obama "signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for rebels seeking to depose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government." This latest leak of classified information was attributed to "U.S. sources familiar with the matter." Published August 2, 2012
GHEI: The true pension burden
The Maryland state retirement and pension system is in bad shape. The deluxe benefits package has $37 billion in assets, but even that amount isn't enough to meet the promises made to government bureaucrats. In the last fiscal year, this prodigious sum was invested in a way that yielded a negligible 0.36 percent return. Published August 1, 2012
EDITORIAL: Obama wins, polls lose
Either President Obama is on track for a major electoral win in November, or there is something seriously wrong with most major polls. Published August 1, 2012
EDITORIAL: Iranian nukes and Jerusalem
Despite recent tough talk coming from the White House regarding Iran, the Obama administration and the mullahs agree on one thing: Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel. Published July 31, 2012
EDITORIAL: Unsustainable investments
Spending other people's money is what the left does best, so it's no surprise congressional Democrats would come up with a scheme to bankroll pet causes with cash from retirees. In 2009, the Democratic-controlled Congress passed a law encouraging the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) to come up with new investment options. Published July 31, 2012
