EDITORIAL: Nixing the artist’s needle
The government, any government, might as well enact an ordinance banning regret as trying to ban tattoos, ugly though many of them are. The District of Columbia health department announced a mandatory 24-hour waiting period for tattoos and piercings as part of a 66-page package of draft rules regulating the city's flourishing business in "body art," which is usually long on body and short on art. The regulators want to protect a man from waking up after painting the town with "Mom" permanently stenciled on his bicep. Published September 11, 2013

EDITORIAL: The straight Scouts
For 103 years, the Boy Scouts of America stood their ground for traditional moral values. That changed in May when the group's leadership succumbed to noisy activist groups (and cowed corporate donors) and opened their ranks to homosexuals. Backers of the Scouting oath, in which each member promises to be "morally straight," think there's an opportunity for a straight alternative. Published September 9, 2013
EDITORIAL: Big Labor smackdown
Labor unions are skilled labor at driving up costs. They use their cozy connections with politicians to legislate schemes giving government agencies no choice but to pay inflated union prices for certain types of projects through "project labor agreements." Those agreements may not be around much longer if a 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision handed down Friday holds. Published September 9, 2013
EDITORIAL: The questions for President Obama
Rarely have so many Americans waited so anxiously to hear a president speak truth to them. We've been talking, debating and speculating around supper tables, in car pools, at work and in all the places Americans gather, about President Obama's proposed "shot across the bow" of Syria's Bashar Assad to punish his deadly and barbaric use of chemical weapons against his own people. Published September 9, 2013
EDITORIAL: The Obamacare bomb
A mere three weeks remain before the Obamacare exchanges open for business. The likely result will be the closing doors on Main Street, as shopkeepers and entrepreneurs shut down, unable to make ends meet. It's clear that the wounded economy can't cope with the exploding costs ahead. Published September 9, 2013
EDITORIAL: Seamus Justin Heaney
Poetry is for lovers, and particularly for the lovers of the language, who linger over words, letters and syllables to marvel how the masters organize words into disciplined choirs and make them sing to the ages. The master of the masters, Seamus Heaney, 74, died last week, remembered by everyone who appreciates a lyrical turn of phrase as "a great oak," fallen. Published September 9, 2013

EDITORIAL: Code red, with embarrassment
It's not easy being a Democrat on the eve of deconstruction. Some of the liberals haven't figured out what to think or say about President Obama and his determination to lob missiles into the men's room at Syrian command headquarters. When George W. Bush took the White House to his Prairie Chapel Ranch near Crawford, Texas, there was always Cindy Sheehan, surrounded by reporters and photographers, protesting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. She became the left's pet rock. Published September 8, 2013
EDITORIAL: Distraction from the debt
Congress comes back on Monday, and all eyes will be on the members and whether they will support the president on Syria. The momentous foreign-policy question diverts attention from the equally pressing concern of what to do about the nation's $16.7 trillion debt. Published September 5, 2013
EDITORIAL: Reality intrudes on a hot dream
Al Gore's multimillion-dollar scheme to persuade the world that global warming is about to boil, fry or saute us all is disappearing faster than an ice cube on the sidewalk on a summer day. Published September 5, 2013
EDITORIAL: Learning at the point of a gun
Government bureaucrats in a lot of places can't abide allowing parents to educate their children. Public schools offer an irresistible opportunity to mold the young in a government-approved image, exposing young minds to the ideological fads of the moment, whether terrifying them with tales of melting icebergs or uplifting them with stories of Heather and her two heroic mommies. It's a compassion some officials are willing to enforce at gunpoint. Published September 5, 2013

EDITORIAL: The income tax Super Bowl
Vegas odds-makers are already taking bets on which teams will be the final contenders for championship rings as football season officially kicks off Thursday night. The best advice on where to place those bets might come from an accountant. Published September 4, 2013
EDITORIAL: The dark side of green
Builders across America are constructing and renovating everything from college football stadiums and Broadway theaters to libraries and elementary schools with an eye toward making environmentalists green with envy. They'll do whatever it takes to persuade the United States Green Building Council to give them an eco-certification award known as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED. Published September 4, 2013
EDITORIAL: Shooting down voter IDs
Addressing the gathering on the Mall last week marking the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, Bill Clinton compared the issues of guns and voting rights. "A great democracy," said the former president, "does not make it harder to vote than to buy an assault weapon." Published September 4, 2013

EDITORIAL: Obama goes to war
President Obama has made what the British call a proper cock-up of his leadership, such as it is, in the campaign to punish Bashar Assad in Syria. Nearly everyone agrees on that much. Five years ago, he said he would unite us, and so he has. Now Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, recognize the mess for what it is, and who made it. Published September 3, 2013
EDITORIAL: Fort Hood massacre’s unfinished business
The Fort Hood shooter is where he belongs, on death row, while his victims remain in limbo. In a fit of political correctness, the Obama administration decided to classify the 2009 massacre on the Texas military base as "workplace violence" instead of what it was: the assault of an Islamic militant upon our soldiers here at home. The real-life consequence of the designation is that the victims aren't being properly compensated for their loss. Published September 3, 2013
EDITORIAL: The other prison transfer
Jailbirds Ophelia De'Lonta and Bradley Manning have a lot in common. Taxpayers are paying for their incarceration, and both want those same taxpayers to pick up the tab for sex-change operations. It's a sign of the times. Published September 3, 2013
