EDITORIAL: A weak Congress empowers Obama

It's easy to blame President Obama for dereliction of duty when he pulls out his pen to sign an executive order imposing sweeping environmental regulations or gun control without engaging Congress. A few senators and congressmen wave their fists, thinking (if not shouting) imprecations at the White House. Published March 3, 2014

EDITORIAL: Entrepreneurs in space

President Obama doesn't understand what Abraham Lincoln was talking about when he called America "the exceptional nation." Mr. Obama says the Americans are no more the exception than "the Brits" or the Greeks, but he's wrong and events are proving it. Published March 3, 2014

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: U.S. ignoring Russian noncompliance

Under President Obama, the United States has ignored the Russian violation of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) and revival of Cold War weaponry that threaten America and our allies. Published March 3, 2014

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Discrimination is the basis of all law

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has rationalized her veto of a bill designed to protect freedom of conscience and religious liberty in her state with the excuse that the measure could have been misused as an instrument of discrimination. Published March 3, 2014

EDITORIAL: Obamacare disadvantage

Nothing clarifies the mind, with apologies to Dr. Johnson, quite like a fight for survival. Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat, arrived at his moment of enlightenment contemplating the likelihood of West Virginia voters returning to the Senate someone who voted to preserve Obamacare. He told a home-state paper, the Beckley Register-Herald, the other day that he would "vote tomorrow" to repeal the law. A day later, presumably after being taken to the woodshed by Harry Reid, Mr. Manchin returned to a state of confusion with a retraction. "I have never supported repealing [Obamacare]," he said. EDITORIAL: The pyramid of cronies

Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign has moved beyond her original goal, which all could applaud, of encouraging children to exercise and eat what's good for them. Now the first lady has introduced a scheme from her husband's administration to micromanage the trip to the supermarket. Otherwise, she says, Americans are too dumb to figure it out on their own. EDITORIAL: The Star-Spangled ban

Old Glory just can't catch a break in the courts. Judges have said you can do anything with the American flag, burn it, step on it, spit on it. Twenty-five years ago the Supreme Court upheld the First Amendment right of the "Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade" to set fire to a stolen flag as an expression of free speech. Last week, an appellate court in San Francisco (naturally) decided that kids can't wear a T-shirt with the Stars and Stripes on it lest it offend someone. Published February 28, 2014

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: ‘Brother’s Keeper’ program is a vote grab

President Obama's "My Brother's Keeper" initiative is troubling on several fronts ("Obama outlines creation of rare black-focused program," Web, Feb. 27). Although Mr. Obama maintains that his policies are color-blind, he seems intent on deceiving the black population by stating that his program will help young black men "stay on track and reach their full potential." LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Who are you calling un-American?

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, said the Koch brothers were "about as un-American as anyone I can imagine" for financing ads critical of Obamacare ("Harry Reid hammered for labeling Obamacare horror tales as untrue," Web, Feb. 27). Published February 28, 2014

EDITORIAL: More Golden States

The late, legendary Warren Zevon used to sing of a day "when California slides into the ocean." Despite the predictions of learned climatologists and seismologists, it may never come to that, if venture capitalist Tim Draper succeeds with a daffy scheme. He's the man behind "The Six Californias" initiative that the state has just certified to go to the signature-gathering phase. Published February 27, 2014

EDITORIAL: The lies governments tell

It's harder by the day to credit the defenders of domestic surveillance. They insist NSA spies are only doing what's necessary to thwart the evil schemes of terrorists. The document collection leaked by Edward J. Snowden consistently undermines the pretty narrative that insists, "Trust us, we're spying for your own good." New files released by NBC News show that some snooping agencies are more obsessed with naughty teenagers than terrorists. Published February 27, 2014

EDITORIAL: A step toward reform

Nearly everybody agrees that the tax system is broken. Jimmy Carter famously said it was "a disgrace to the human race," and for once Mr. Carter spoke for just about everybody. But every line of the tax code has a fierce champion. Introducing a reform plan is a guaranteed way to make enemies. Published February 27, 2014

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: No authority without Constitution

Lately, we have witnessed the creation of numerous laws by President Obama via executive order. Article 1 Section 1 of our Constitution states: "All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives."
