LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Only God can truly judge
I find the calls for President Trump to resign disgusting, pathetic and obnoxious. What they mean, in effect, is that tens of millions of people who did not vote for Donald Trump want to nullify and dismiss the votes of tens of millions of other people who, like me, did vote for him. EDITORIAL: The deadly descent of Obamacare
That flying contraption called Obamacare is locked in the downward spiral that is the nightmare of every pilot. Escape is not likely short of a miracle, and Congress doesn't do miracles. Congress is fleeing the scene of the crime for a long and undeserved vacation, leaving with cries of "good luck." Published August 22, 2017
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Everyone a victim?
Recently Sen. Tim Scott, South Carolina Republican, reportedly suggested that, in order to become better educated in living history, President Trump meet with African-Americans who have dealt with racism. Published August 22, 2017
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Free nations don’t erase history
I am most distressed over the wave of hysteria sweeping our nation over Confederate statues and monuments. I have witnessed the mayors of at least two cities order the removal of statues without regard to any democratic process, and I have seen a hate-filled mob destroy a monument in Durham, North Carolina. Now mayors across the country appear to be falling like dominoes to yield to the demands of the mob and destroy a part of our historical legacy simply because some people don't like it. EDITORIAL: A surge in Afghanistan
All of Arabia (and Iran, too) is not worth the life of one American soldier as the price of conquest, but securing America against the threat of radical Islamic terrorism is worth whatever it takes. Americans have no taste for colonial conquest, which is fundamental to the ideals of the republic. But neither do Americans cut and run when the wind is up. Published August 22, 2017
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Totalitarians topple statues
The toppling of statues is a hallmark of communism, as every new regime attempts to disqualify or erase history. Published August 21, 2017
EDITORIAL: All aboard the censor ship
The angry and occasionally violent left has drawn the battle lines and demands that America choose a side. On one side, in the view from the left, are the liberals who call themselves "progressives," pious bearers of righteousness, devoid of bad motives and without original sin. On the other side is everyone else, deplorables, yahoos, bigots, racists and other bad people whose unpardonable sin is that they voted for Donald Trump. "Deplorables" have no rights, and the mob is entitled to impose "justice." Published August 21, 2017
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: We deserve high-speed government
President Trump had to fire Chief White House Strategist Steve Bannon; new Chief of Staff John F. Kelly has to show that he has control of the White House staff. Why, exactly, does this staff not understand that they are supposed to be invisible and work behind the scenes? Published August 21, 2017
EDITORIAL: Lessons in the dark
Crowds gathered with eager anticipation. There were runs on "eclipse sunglasses," with 7-Eleven running out early, and Amazon accused of selling sunglasses that weren't guaranteed to keep out the right rays. Amazon might deliver on the protective gear, so the street wisdom went, but you might go blind. Published August 21, 2017
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Talk to Kim?
Since talks are ongoing with North Korea, a logical mediation on the part of President Trump would be an invitation to Kim Jong-un to meet at Mar-a-Lago or the White House. Published August 20, 2017
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Hatred OK for liberals
I can't in good conscience stand by and not speak out against the news media and left-leaning radicals accusing our president of being racist. For example, FOX News' Juan Williams recently had the audacity to chastise our president for not rebuking and using stronger language against those who caused the death of the woman in the Charlottesville assault. Published August 20, 2017
EDITORIAL: Striking a blow against thirst
The Obama administration decreed six years ago that the national parks could sell soda pop but not water to visitors seeking to slake their thirst on trails through the splendor of nature. Sugar water yes, plain water no. Published August 20, 2017
EDITORIAL: A spy story for our times
Imran Awan is a Pakistani-born computer whiz who worked for Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and for dozens of Democrats in Congress. He and his wife have been indicted on four criminal counts of bank fraud and lying to investigators. Published August 20, 2017
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Qualifications have no sex, creed
In the backlash from firing engineer James Damore, the CEO of Google said, "[L]et's not forget what unites us as a company -- our desire to build great products for everyone that make a big difference in their lives" ("Google's 'diversity' campaign seeks social, not technical, innovation," Web, Aug. 13). Very nice words — yet that is all they are. Published August 17, 2017
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Offended by all, left with nil
Along with the Confederate flag, to many Americans statues of Civil War generals have become symbols of a hateful and intolerant past. Relocation of these monuments is a difficult but reasonable compromise (especially given the alternative of having mobs topple and destroy them). Published August 17, 2017
EDITORIAL: Illusion in a slogan
Putting "America first" is what Americans expect of every president, and despite its isolationist history in the months leading up to World War II, the words "America first" can put a lump in many an American throat. "America first" was one of the slogans Donald Trump rode into the White House. Published August 17, 2017
EDITORIAL: Iceland finds a deadly ‘cure’
It's not an exaggeration to think that Margaret Sanger, the 20th century eugenicist, or advocate of improving the human population by controlled breeding, would feel at home in Iceland. Published August 17, 2017
EDITORIAL: A pot hole in the culture
What's good for American children is good for America's future. A growing number of states are forgetting that -- if not in word, then in deed. The trend toward increasing legalization of marijuana is resulting in rising numbers of kids requiring medical treatment or hospitalization for narcotic intoxication. Published August 16, 2017
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Trump’s revision rang hollow
In reviewing the stunning twists and turns of the Trump administration in the days following the atrocity that took place in Charlottesville, one recognizes that perhaps the most laughable pledge made by the president is that he would bring us together. Meanwhile he pours gasoline on our wounds and lights a match. Published August 16, 2017
EDITORIAL: A pardon for Sheriff Joe
President Trump is "seriously considering" pardoning Joe Arpaio, the Arizona sheriff who was convicted July 31 of misdemeanor contempt of court for ignoring a judge's order to quit detaining those he suspected of being illegal immigrants. Published August 16, 2017
