EDITORIAL: Persistent prosecution of Obama-era prey has lost its appeal

Fantasy has its place, but it's not the courtroom. With more than a full share of unlikely twists, the case against former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn for lying to the FBI has lost a line of sight with reality. When the legal process carries prosecution of a citizen beyond the bounds of common sense, Americans sense instinctively that the system is out of whack. For the law to be respected, the law must be just. Published May 17, 2020

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Decorum vs. economic health

Should President Trump's deportment be the overriding political issue of the coming election? Wouldn't a comparison of what his opponent has done and plans to do for American citizens make for more valid and beneficial criteria? Published May 17, 2020

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Obama should testify about Flynn

Is there any serious reason why former President Obama should not be subpoenaed to testify before the Senate committees investing those 39 "unmaskings" of retired Lt. Gen. Flynn's name in classified intelligence documents? Published May 17, 2020

EDITORIAL: News is best when it’s disseminated, discussed and debated in the public square

These days it is both common and unpleasant to hear espoused, especially by members of the elite, that the coronacrisis is helpfully accelerating the demise -- if not total destruction -- of sclerotic industries. One such industry, and everyone's favorite whipping boy, if we are being honest, is the media, particularly newspapers, which seem to have now regressed from a decade-long serious condition to one in need of critical attention. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Let Taiwan attend summit

The 73rd session of the World Health Organization's World Health Assembly will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 17 to May 21, and will be attended by delegations from more than 190 member states. Regrettably, Taiwan is barred from attending. Published May 14, 2020

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: ‘Stay at home’ bad for immunity

There will be no magic pill, no vaccine. Instead, the coronavirus will join the list of illnesses with which the human population lives. If you want to start to decipher why Italy is worse than Sweden, or New York is worse than Florida or even Georgia, there is ample associative evidence to mull. But don't get your hopes up that it will pop up in the mainstream media. It involves no drugs and no financial models. Published May 14, 2020

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Pelosi, Schumer, Schiff must pay

With the coronavirus taking center stage in our lives, I hope people don't forget the criminal actions and misery we were put through by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Chuck Schumer and Reps. Adam Schiff and Jerrold Nadler, who have crawled out from under their rocks to deceive and rob the taxpayer once again. Published May 13, 2020

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Read between the lines

Communication scholars know that what isn't said is as important as what is said. Case in point: After Tuesday's Senate hearing on the Trump administration's coronavirus response, it was clear we shouldn't have expected the public health officials to explicitly undermine the president. While they didn't lie, these experts deflected questions pertaining to the president's performance. They know Donald Trump and understand the importance of remaining on his task force. Hence, they were rhetorically cautious. Published May 13, 2020

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Mail-in votes a bad idea

The push by Democrats to endorse write-in voting and pick-up votes by door-to-door harvesting should raise a red flag. Their abysmal performance passing the COVID-19 stimulus package does not sit well in the craw of even other Democrats. The temptation to revert to the old Chicago style of "Vote and vote often" can't be discounted, considering the true characters of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Tests don’t reveal much

Today some in the media have piled onto the idea we need more coronavirus testing. Do those asking the questions know that these tests are only a snapshot of that moment in time? They are no guarantee that one day (or even one hour) after testing negative you will not have the virus. Published May 12, 2020

EDITORIAL: We can bring the economy back, but only by incentivizing a return to work

In as dramatic a turn of events as we've seen in our lifetimes, America went from virtual full employment to the highest level of unemployment in just about a blink of any eye. The economy is as flat on its back as it's been since any time since the worst parts of the Great Depression and, as yet, no one has come up with the way out. Published May 11, 2020

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: No justice for Russia-collusion liars

The unfolding facts surrounding the investigation into the Trump-Russia collusion investigation are making crystal-clear that this was nothing more than an illegal attempt to unseat a duly elected president. The principals in this plot have been exposed and their unethical and criminal activities are now plain for all to see. The Democratic perpetrators and most of our major media lied to us for months, attempting to further a cause they new was false. Published May 11, 2020

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Adding insult to injury

We are now facing three epidemics: a health crisis, fear and the loss of freedom resulting from it. These crises are aiding and abetting the herd mentality, keeping the herd ("sheeple") dazed, uninformed and confused while the attempt to control them spreads like a cancer. When that happens, freedom disappears and resistance ebbs, either voluntarily or by force. Published May 11, 2020

EDITORIAL: Joe Biden was an advocate for outsourcing critical U.S. industry to China

We haven't heard much lately from former Vice President Joe Biden who, practically everyone presumes, will be facing off against Donald J. Trump later this year. The coronavirus pandemic has allowed him to fly pretty much below the radar ever since he dispatched Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders from the race just about eight weeks ago. Published May 10, 2020

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Time to show extra compassion

Ramazan (Ramadan in Turkish) is a time of extending a hand of mercy and compassion to those in need. During these very difficult times, we, the Turkish-American community, have been showing just such compassion to our health care providers, first responders and food pantries. Published May 10, 2020

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Men can be abuse victims, too

It is good to help survivors of domestic abuse and to fund anti-violence programs. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) needs some revision, but not necessarily the kind envisioned by House Democrats ("Police, advocates: Strict stay-at-home orders put domestic violence victims in tougher situation," Web, May 6). LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Right bears brunt of blame

The political left's hatred toward President Trump is becoming increasingly destructive. Leftist politicians have abandoned negotiation, compromise and humility. They are determined to change and cast America into their mold -- and design no matter how often they need to trample on the Constitution to achieve this end. Published May 7, 2020
