Joye Miller, of La Crosse, Wis. was a sophomore when her older brother George was shot and killed in 2015. Joye took her anger, grief and loss out on herself, skipping school and class, and battling with her teachers and her peers. As she worked through her grief, Joye turned things around and pushed forward. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
