Metro officials said 11 people were injured early Wednesday after a work vehicle crashed into a stationary train in the District.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said an idling Silver Line train was hit by the vehicle in the Metro Center station shortly after midnight Wednesday.
Authorities said the nearly dozen people who were hurt suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Metro General Manager Randy Clarke said all 11 people were able to walk off the train following the early morning collision.
Investigators have determined that the crash was not caused by a “nefarious” act or infrastructure issues, officials said.
“Safety is our core value & we are proud of how safe Metro is but this incident emphasizes there is always room to improve” Mr. Clarke posted on X in an update. “We will learn from the incident & investigation and continue to ensure customer & staff safety is paramount in all we do.”
Metro said delays to the Orange and Blue lines, which share tracks with the Silver Line, should be expected as the crash remains under investigation.
Silver Line trains are still running between Ashburn and Clarendon.
The National Transportation Safety Board is assisting with the probe.
