OPINION:
On Monday, embattled Rep. Eric Swalwell, California Democrat, announced his resignation from Congress. It can’t happen soon enough.
It has been a roller-coaster ride for the man who just a short time ago was a leading contender for the governorship of the Golden State.
Last week, the allegations of sexual misconduct started coming in fast and furious, including one by a woman 17 years his junior who said that when they were together, she was too intoxicated to consent to sex. The matter is being investigated by the Manhattan district attorney’s office.
Although Mr. Swalwell denies any wrongdoing, people who have worked closely with him aren’t convinced. A letter signed by more than 50 of his former staffers said the allegations of sexual misconduct are “serious” and “credible” and called on him to resign from Congress.
A number of House Democrats joined the chorus. Some said they would vote in favor of a motion of expulsion. Rep. Ro Khanna, a fellow California Democrat, said the allegations are “despicable” and “demean the integrity of Congress.”
Besides the Manhattan district attorney, Mr. Swalwell is also under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security for hiring a Brazilian national whose work permit had expired as a nanny for his children throughout 2023 and 2024.
Adding insult to injury, Federal Election Commission reports indicate that the lady was paid $46,930 in campaign funds.
Dodging the bullet in 2020 made the uber-liberal congressman reckless.
At that time, the House Ethics Committee ended a two-year investigation of Mr. Swalwell’s relationship with Christine Feng, alleged to be a Chinese spy, who helped raise funds for his 2014 reelection campaign and was said to provide more personal services as well.
The committee recommended that no further action be taken against Mr. Swalwell after cautioning members of Congress to be careful about which Chinese spies they take to bed.
Mr. Swalwell is famous for his self-righteous posturing. Since last year, he has tried various devices to block the president from protecting the world from nuclear weapons in the hands of the mad mullahs.
He suspended his gubernatorial campaign late last week. With the announcement of his intention to resign from Congress, his legislative career is drawing to a close.
Depending on the outcome of investigations underway, Mr. Swalwell could be going from the House of Representatives to the big house.
