Iris Weatherwax, 97, was belatedly awarded her high school diploma in a private ceremony on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017, at her residence in Grand Blanc, Mich. Weatherwax was barred from graduating from the Davison Community School District in 1938 because she was pregnant at the time, despite the fact that she was also married. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
