This photo provided by Montana Historical Society shows Sidney Edgerton. Edgerton is, arguably, the father of Montana. He was instrumental in lobbying for its creation as the Montana Territory and its current boundaries. He also served as its first territorial governor. It appears that bitter partisanship is nothing new in U.S. and Montana politics, particularly during the Civil War, and he was one of its victims.
