Republic Records is an American record company. A division of Universal Music Group (UMG), it was founded by Avery Lipman and Monte Lipman as an independent label in 1995. It was acquired by UMG in 2000, and operated initially as an imprint of the Universal/Motown Records Group. Following a 2006 reorganization, the label was renamed Universal/Republic.
