Exhibit: Transferred: Alternative Processes in Photography There's no Instagram or Hipstamatic at work in this show. Instead, the photos are made via "Gum Transfer on Handmade Paper," "Watercolor on Toned Cyanotype," "Pure Palladium on Translucent Vellum," and "Palladium Print from Wet Plat Collodion Negative." Physical materials, in other words. "I gravitated towards experimental images, playful images and images that made intriguing references to photographic history," Says Regina DeLuise, the juror of Torpedo Factor's latest photo show. "All the work appealed to my sense of curiosity and contains a true expression of visual poetry; it reveals a command of the materials, so that in fact, we don't dwell on the material, but move directly to the artist own vision." The works in question are photographs in a vanishing sense of the word. To Nov. 27 at the Torpedo Factory Gallery, 105 N. Union St., Alexandria, Va. Phone: 703-838-4565. Party: Nerd Nite Most English speakers are familiar with John Donne's Meditation 17, in which the famed metaphysical poet observes, "No man is an island." Fewer may realize that Donne penned a companion meditation, which he titled "17.0.01" and made exclusively available for torrent on The Pirate Bay. This follow-up meditation held that "No nerd is an island." Nerds need companionship, too, Donne seemed to be saying. For communal D.C. nerds, there's DC9's Nerd Nite, which will feature smart people speaking about things that could very well interest other smart people. Mischa Levin will talk about "malware, monetization and how to keep your parents from calling you with their computer problems"; Heather Mallory will discuss "how butterflies can learn shapes and colors, how praying mantises learn to avoid foods that make them barf, and how bees transmit complex information about the location and quality of resources using a dance that would make John Travolta proud"; Amber Straughn will discuss recent developments in telescope science; and the brainy and very listenable Tereu Tereu will provide tunes. Nov. 12 at DC9, 1940 9th St. NW. Phone: (202) 483-5000. Web: http://www.dcnine.com/
