In a July 21, 2017 photo, Spring Lake Village President Joyce Verplank Hatton discusses the possibility of disincorporating the Village of Spring Lake inside her village condo in Spring Lake, Mich. An advocate for smaller local government, Hatton wants to disband the village through disincorporation. A "yes" vote on Aug. 8 would not put the official process of disincorporation into motion, but rather amend the charter to allow the village to create a mechanism to do so. Should the August proposal be accepted by voters, a second vote to begin the legal process of disincorporation would be required on the Nov. 8 ballot in both the village and township.
