BOTTLES.jpg
** FILE ** This Aug. 11, 2009, file photo provided by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography shows Matt Durham, center, pulling in a large patch of sea garbage with the help of Miriam Goldstein, right, in the Pacific Ocean. Plastics discarded by people often end up in the ocean, creating coastal pollution that harms marine life and gathers out at sea in what's become known as the great Pacific garbage patch. Now, California state lawmakers have introduced a law that if passed would require makers of plastic bottles, bags and packaging to replace plastics with more environmentally friendly alternatives. ** FILE ** This image released by NASA on Monday, May 20, 2013, shows a hole in a Martian rock drilled by the NASA rover Curiosity on May 19. It’s the second drilling by the spacecraft since landing in August 2012. Curiosity used the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera on the rover's arm to capture this view of the hole in the rock, dubbed "Cumberland." The diameter of the hole is about 0.6 inch (1.6 centimeters), the depth about 2.6 inches (6.6 centimeters). In the coming days, Curiosity will transfer the rock powder to its onboard instruments to analyze the chemical makeup. (Associated Press/NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS)
