Exhibit: Manifold Greatness The best-selling book of all time is said to be the Bible. The Folger Museum´s exhibit on The King James Bible seeks to put that claim in context with a history of the how the King James Bible in particular came to exist, and its cultural penetration. The astronauts on Apollo 8, for instance, read King James on Christmas Eve in 1968, while orbiting the moon, while Gonzo comic R. Crumb copied its verse word-for-word for his illustration of Genesis. Theater: Dr. Dolittle When Hugh Lofting was fighting for the Irish Guard in World War I, he could not bring himself to write to his children about the horrors of war. Instead, he told them about a doctor who treated only animals. These letters became the basis for the Doctor Dolittle series and the inspiration for Janet Stanford´s production of Dr. Dolittle, which tells the classic tale through a Lewis Carroll-like double-world in which Lofting´s letters are acted out by soldiers with animallike qualities.

Concert: Drive-By Truckers Thanks largely to musical carpetbaggers, the genre known as "alt. countryÓ is seldom either of those things. There is not enough grit in the music, and the artists have had too few skirmishes with involuntary poverty and/or rickets. The Drive-By Truckers have been keeping it real since 1996, when sons of Alabama Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley reunited in Athens, Georgia, and put together the best southern rock band since Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the best alt. country act since Lucinda Williams. Having nearly made it big once before, in the late 80s, Hood and Cooley toiled in relative obscurity until 2001, when the independently released "Southern Rock OperaÓ received such critical acclaim that the band signed with a major label to re-release the hell out of it. The rest, they say, is history. DBT is now a big enough deal to play three back-to-back nights of shows at the 9:30 Club, all of which but NYE are sold out, so move quickly if you want to ring in the new year with songs about roadside crosses, George Wallace´s trip to hell, and other southern mythologies.
