Costa Rican investigators are searching for the home intruders who killed California surfing legend Kurt Van Dyke in an apparent robbery. Mr. Van Dyke was found fatally stabbed in his home on Saturday.
Officials said the assailants assaulted Mr. Van Dyke’s girlfriend before choking and stabbing the surfer during the confrontation, according to media reports. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His girlfriend survived the assault and is working with the authorities.
Mr. Van Dyke, a 66-year-old from Santa Cruz, California, came from a prominent surfing family and had lived in Costa Rica for decades. Known as the “King of the Salsa Brava,” he owned the Hotel Puerto Viejo in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, reports said.
Members of the surfing community have shared their tributes to Mr. Van Dyke on social media as a beloved figure.
