Rockville police on Tuesday charged a 16-year-old boy with attempted murder after officials said he brought a gun to his high school and opened fire on another student.
Authorities said that Kahlil White-Villatoro also pointed his gun at a 15-year-old girl before taking aim at his Thomas S. Wootton High School classmate Monday afternoon.
The boy has been charged as an adult in the shooting that left the male student wounded. Police said the victim was in stable condition at a hospital and that the boys know each other, but did not elaborate on their relationship.
Officials said they recovered a Polymer80 9 mm handgun linked to the shooting late Monday outside of the school.
The suspect faces charges of second-degree attempted murder, as well as felony assault and gun-related charges in the shooting.
Mr. White-Villatoro remains behind bars in Montgomery County as he awaits his Wednesday bond hearing.
Police said they were called to Wootton High around 2:15 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of a shooting.
Investigators said they found the wounded student first inside a hallway and apprehended the suspected shooter near the school a short time later.
Wootton High was placed on lockdown for several hours as police sorted out the crime scene. Students were eventually dismissed to reunite with their families just before 5 p.m.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ field office in Baltimore said it’s assisting with the investigation.
