Washington Capitals defenseman Rasmus Sandin underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair an ACL tear that he suffered during the April 11 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, the franchise announced Wednesday.

Sandin is expected to miss the start of the next NHL season.

“A return to play timeline will be determined by his individual progression,” the Capitals wrote on X. “With typical recovery from this injury estimated at 6-9 months.”

Sandin became one of the Capitals’ top defensemen after the team traded franchise stalwart John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks in March.

Sandin ended the season with five goals and 24 assists, trailing only Jakob Chychrun for the lead in points among Washington’s defensemen.

“I saw a lot out of Sandy,” teammate Connor McMichael said last week when asked who helped fill the Carlson-sized hole in the locker room. “I don’t think I remember a game where Sandy was off. He was doing all the little things: blocking shots, breaking pucks out.”

Sandin will be a Capital for the foreseeable future. He signed a five-year, $24 million extension with the team in 2024.
