OPINION:
Many people do not understand President Trump’s efforts with regard to Greenland.
Mr. Trump is a true leader. He thinks outside the box and determines to influence. Managers just manage; there’s a difference.
Many may not know this, but in 1946, during the Truman administration, America made a formal offer of $100 million to buy Greenland. It did not work out. We also have the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. France sold 530 million acres of territory in North America to us for $15 million. Subsequently, 15 states were fully or partially carved out of the Louisiana Purchase.
Secretary of State William Seward negotiated with Russian authorities to purchase the Alaska land area for $7.2 million.
So the idea of purchasing land masses has precedent.
Now, why would Mr. Trump desire Greenland for America? First, Greenland remains pivotal for air defenses. If China or Russia released ballistic missiles toward America, many of them would probably go over Greenland.
Second, Greenland is rich in mineral deposits. Rare earth metals, precious metals, precious stones, coal, graphite and uranium can all be found there.
China has a keen interest in Greenland as well, and it has attempted to expand its footprint in the area through scientific research expeditions, infrastructure investments and natural resource acquisitions. China’s designs on Greenland further illustrate the geostrategic importance of the island, and Mr. Trump realizes this.
He also realizes the proximity China would have to America if it is able to possess or gain a greater footprint in the area.
Mr. Trump’s efforts to obtain Greenland are not foolishness. He is pragmatic, and he is looking ahead for America’s future, security and sovereignty.
We have a real leader in the White House, and I applaud his efforts.
