A 12-year-old boy found Tuesday in critical condition from gunshot wounds in Northeast has died, the Metropolitan Police Department said Wednesday.

Officers found Tyale Coates, 14, and Mhilo Young, 12 in the 700 block of Kenilworth Avenue NE at about 3:27 p.m. Tuesday following reports of gunfire. Tyale was declared dead at the scene and Mhilo had life-threatening injuries, police said.

Responders took Mhilo to a hospital, where he died.

Metropolitan Police interim Chief Jeffery Carroll said at a news briefing that Tyale and Mhilo were with a group of people in a convenience store parking lot at the time of the shooting.

Chief Carroll said two shooters approached the group and opened fired with a large number of gunshots in a short amount of time, striking Mhilo and Tyale. He also said the department is looking for suspects.

A witness told WDVM-TV that he saw the gunmen behind a yellow donation box for clothing and shoes. He said they appeared to be teenagers, were wearing ski masks and fired about 15 to 20 shots.

The witness also told WDVM-TV that he saw one gunman get into a black Tesla with Virginia plates and the other get into a silver Honda Civic with Maryland plates that had a plastic bag on the rear driver’s side window.

The Metropolitan Police Department asks that anyone with information call (202) 727-9099 or text 50411. The police said that people who provide information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case will be eligible for a $25,000 reward for each victim and $50,000 in total.
