A convicted sex offender was sent to prison on Monday for bringing a stolen shotgun onto a Metro bus in the District of Columbia two years ago.
Gerald Evans, alias “Big Woobie G,” was sentenced to 21 months in prison and three subsequent years of supervised release on one count of unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition as a felon, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia said in a release.
He pleaded guilty to the offense in January.
Evans, 30, boarded the Metro bus on Dec. 10, 2024, without paying, and a Metro Transit Police officer on board asked him to step off. During the stop, officers asked Evans what was in a bag he had, and he told them it was his gun, prosecutors said.
Officers found the Mossberg 590 Shockwave 12-gauge shotgun with a round in the chamber and another three in the magazine and, after checking the serial number, found the gun had been reported as stolen.
At the time of the incident, Evans already had multiple felony convictions, including for trying to rob someone following an armed carjacking arrest in 2013, a second-degree assault conviction in Prince George’s County, Maryland, while out on probation for that offense, and a 2016 Prince George’s conviction for a fourth-degree sex offense, prosecutors said.
Despite that sex conviction, Evans has “repeatedly failed to register as a sex offender in the jurisdictions in which he has lived,” prosecutors said.
In all, Evans had 23 “prior law enforcement encounters” before the bus incident, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said in the release.
