Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday will attend the funeral of Tyre Nichols, who died at the hands of police in Memphis, Tennessee, the White House announced.
Nichols family attorney Ben Crump also confirmed that Ms. Harris will attend the funeral, saying in a statement that Ms. Harris spoke with Nichols’ parents on the phone for more than 30 minutes on Tuesday.
Ms. Harris and Nichols’ mother RowVaughn Wells talked, and “the vice president was able to console Ms. Wells and even help her smile,” Mr. Crump said in a statement.
Several Biden administration officials will accompany Ms. Harris to Memphis, including current White House director of public engagement Keisha Lance Bottoms, and senior adviser Mitch Landrieu.
Nichols died three days after he was beaten by Memphis police officers following a routine traffic stop on Jan. 7. All five of the officers were fired on Jan. 20 after an internal investigation concluded they had used excessive force and failed to render aid.
The officers are also facing second-degree murder charges.
