Russell Wilson doesn’t sound like he wants to play in Washington.

The star quarterback on Tuesday kindly put some cold water on the speculation about him being traded to the Washington Commanders this offseason. During an appearance on NBC’s “TODAY,” Wilson was asked by host and self-described Washington fan Craig Melvin about his interest in playing for the Commanders.

“Would you ever perhaps consider moving east and playing for the team in the nation’s capital?” Melvin asked.

“I love the East Coast, but I think the West Coast is better for me right now,” said Wilson, who grew up in Richmond, Virginia. “I’ve got my whole family over here. I’m from Richmond, I know what you mean. I’ve got people hitting me up every day, all my friends from the East Coast. But Seattle is the place I’m at right now. I love it and it’s great.”

Wilson’s straightforward answer didn’t stop Washington fans on Twitter from parsing his words in hopes of finding a hint that shows the Super Bowl-winning quarterback actually does want to come play for one of the worst NFL franchises in the last three decades.

“Sounds like he’s coming.”

“That’s not a no!”

“He definitely wants to come here lowkey.”

“‘Right now’ love to hear that. Didn’t rule it out at all.”

Not everyone on Twitter was trying to spin his answer, though.

“Oh well it was nice to hope.”

“Why would he ruin his career coming here?”

“Washington fans need to move on from this silly waste of time of a topic. He’s not coming. He was never coming.”
