Maryland’s Ryan Ramsey accomplished a rare feat in collegiate baseball Friday night, becoming just the second pitcher in school history to pitch a perfect game.

Ramsey’s achievement is the 34th perfect game in NCAA history and the first since Duke’s Bryce Jarvis threw one in February 2020. He struck out 10 batters on a season-high 118 pitches for the Terrapins in the 13-0 win over Northwestern.

“I definitely could sense it all around me” heading to the mound to start the ninth inning, Ramsey told The Diamondback, Maryland’s student newspaper. “Honestly, the first part of the season, I haven’t been able to command a lot of offspeed pitches, have everything together and feel the way I did tonight. Tonight was one of those nights where I was able to lock in.”

Ramsey’s big night is Maryland’s first perfect game since Dick Reitz threw one against Johns Hopkins in April 1959, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Ramsey, a junior, was second team All-Big Ten last season as a reliever and led the Terrapins with a 1.67 ERA in 37.2 innings.

His success has carried over to 2022 — Ramsey has a 2.42 ERA in 11 appearances this season after the Terrapins converted him to a starter.
