LOS ANGELES (AP) - A gray whale died after being found inside the surf line at a Los Angeles beach.
The 25-foot (7.62-meter) whale was spotted at Dockweiler Beach around 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department’s lifeguard division tweeted that any attempt to tow the whale would likely cause a critical injury.
At the direction of marine experts, the whale was left in place in hope that the tidal cycle would enable it to return to deeper water.
During the evening it was determined that the whale was dead.
Work to remove the animal was expected to begin Thursday.
