LAS VEGAS (AP) - The parents of a Las Vegas man who died months after winning “Jeopardy!” are creating a scholarship program in his honor.
Scott and Debbie Smith told the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Monday that the Brayden Smith Memorial Fund will go toward assisting aspiring southern Nevada students.
Brayden Smith died Feb. 5 of complications following surgery.
The 24-year-old became a five-time champion on the popular quiz show last year. He was also one of the last contestants to appear alongside host Alex Trebek, who died of pancreatic cancer on Nov. 8.
The Smiths say their son, a UNLV graduate, was a voracious reader who dreamed of appearing on “Jeopardy!.”
The fund will focus on students who share Brayden Smith’s love of learning. Debbie Smith says they have already received donations online and through the mail from around the world.
