ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Harford County Executive Barry Glassman says he’s running for state comptroller.

The Republican made the announcement Thursday.

Glassman says he believes the state needs someone with experience in executive office to be the next comptroller, which is the state’s tax collector.

The comptroller is one of three members of the state’s powerful Board of Public Works. The governor and treasurer are the other two members.

The office will be open, because current Comptroller Peter Franchot is running for governor.

Glassman is the first Republican to enter the race. Two Democrats also have announced they are running, Del. Brooke Lierman and Bowie Mayor Tim Adams.
